i got about 200 skydives now, have been thinking about BASE since i started that. i havent really decided if its for me yet, i just cant stop thinking about it. i'm living in switzerland, and would love to do some ground-crewing and work my way up eventually..

Definitely get proper training before you jump.

If you can find a mentor near where you live that is a good way to get started.
Offering to ground crew is a step in the right direction.

If you decide you want to do a structured FJC course at a good object to learn from, BASE Camp is held several times a year at the Perrine Bridge.

you mean, i shouldnt take my wingsuit off the nearest cliff with my skydiving-gear!?

    only kidding!

i actually asked one of the well known dudes around here to mentor me, he wants me to have at least another 100 jumps before he considers it. which is fine by me! as i said, i'm not quite sure yet, all i know is i feel really tempted. i thought that ground-crewing would give me a better feel for the thing, thus would be a good opportunity to have a deeper insight on it. so far, u-tube, the different boards and some chats were my only source of information. but that actually got me started into skydiving too..
your course there sounds really good! so you want your students to have their own rigs already to begin with!?
that would make for a nice, epic holidays-trip actually..

I do have BASE gear you can rent for the course.
If a person is certain they want to get into BASE then doing BASE Camp with their own rig makes sense if they have their own rig by the start of the course. For someone like yourself who isn't sure you want to take up the sport but wants to try it and see, then renting gear makes sense.

The gear rental fee is $250 for the whole course. BASE Camp is 5 days long and we usually do 15-20 jumps with good weather.

I have seen Johnny's course first hand. IT'S AWESOME...unlike that chump that is mentoring me...(what a tool).

I can't remember how many students he had last summer at the bridge but his "students" were way ahead of me in packing and jumping skills by the end of their stay at the Perrine Bridge, and I only live 2 hours away. Quite a few Brits in his course and a Canadian too. If I remember right they had 15-18 jumps by the time they were done with Johnny's course.

I'm not really bagging on my mentor....we both have very busy lives (and he should get busy and find a jobby job!) but if you have the time to spend with Johnny I'D HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIS COURSE! I was just a cheap ass and found someone else to use me as rail-meat on the bridge.

Hey Mr. Utah...how's that for a "plug"? Can I expect a check in the mail?

    Re: hey everyone!

Hey buddy, toss me a grand and I'll clear a week for you (if you can clear a week yourself)

Even Johnny's course, which is the most extensive in my opinion, doesn't do the same as having a mentor or some experienced people to jump with.

You're better off being pissed because your mentor says your not ready to jump a cliff even though when we're rabbits we seem to think we know everything than smashing in.

Taking in an FJC or camp will prepare you and give you experience so that you have confidence on jumps you may attempt on your own but it also lets the other jumpers in the area know you are serious about jumping and that you're not going to go in when they take you to some of the local objects. 85% of today's FJC students, when finished, should be jumping with others and continuing the learning process. In fact the learning NEVER ceases.

Remember in skydiving when people said 'slow is fast'? It applies even more in base (or when I'm teaching it at least).

    Re: hey everyone!

you're funny! in a good way..

so far, i havent tried to get over my head in BASE. cant really say that aboout skydiving, however.. but, whatever floats your boat!

personally, i dont think that an FJC will make make you a BASEjumper of any kind. AFF thaught me, ok, this is skydiving, see what you get from it. and my instructors got me a hard time, not the american-"25 jumps, you're a licensed skydiver now!"-kind of way, but they made me jump my very first own packjob. made me do what is probably around a C-license (without the nightumps) in american tongue and so on. sure, i hated them every once in a while, but in the end, i obliged, and am a certified "swiss" skyjumper now. amongst the highest standards in the sport. and my home-dropzone is known for the toughest requirements in this small country.

but anyway: i probably can still drink more than you, and that without puking even! altough, i'm not sure i wont puke the first time i'm on a BASE exit point!

i believe that BASE is for me, but since i'm a self-responsible skyjumper now, i have doubts about my skill-set, for this very much hardcore version of skyjumping! and i did my first WS-flights very early.. and felt ready for it. when looking back, that probably wasnt the wisest choice, but i had the power and strength to put it down again for another 100 or 120 jumps until i met the requirements. so,

so, to begin with, i wanted to go skydiving, and i didnt do any tandems or shit like that, i paid upfront for AFF, and altough it made me sick on the 2nd and 3rd jump, and my instructors did theirs to further frustrate me, i fucking kept going with it until i got my license...

i wanted to do it right from the start, and i kept going. so there's no need for you to flame me around here. you might think i'm a fuckwit, and you're probaby right about that, but i like to do things my way. and an FJC with utah sounds just about right for me. otherwise, i'd just take my m1 off the nearest cliff and go for silver on my skydiving-gear and become a legend..

besides the banter, whoever you are, i'd do a jump or two anytime with ye'..

    Re: hey everyone!

I am not beating down my mentor or you virgin-burner....I am just giving him shit because we are never around each other at the same time...Not his doing or mine intentionally, just how the timing has worked out. My reference to Johnny's course was simply watching what his students learned in 5 days at the bridge, I am pretty sure they were all foreigners....even that guy from Canadia! My point was that if you come over here and want to "cram" as much as you can learn in a short period of time an FJC is the way to go....but as Hamsandwich said you still need that mentor...even if he does blow you off to go chase tail in Florida!

Other than that it's just my advice from one fledgling lemming to a new lemming. I wouldn't trade Hamsandwich scaring then shit outta me for nothing!

Wait till next year Abbie....I am going to have you shit yourself when I get those wolves IN THE TENT! HAHAHAAHA....

*disclaimer* My previous post was intended to be strictly humorous with a slight bit of seriousness to it. If you read all that shit and took it serious you need to go find gainful employment!
