Default tracking position

Hi
I was given advice from an FF instructor recently on the best tracking position & it was much diff to what i had read about / been taught before (& what is also on the knowledge articles here).

he said to bring knees slightly fwd in bent position & slightly apart (say if perched on edge of chair if upright), prob about 45 deg angle, & relax arms & place not at the sides, but further back (& they can be bent) - behind you if you were standing up. as before chin tucked in against chest. apparently this recreates the wing lift effect better.

i have seen this on FF tracking videos but never in base.

wondered if anyone uses this position, disagrees with it, or has other positions which are preferred. obv I wld like to practice & perfect the one which gets me furthest before starting base.

I've seen some incredible tracking with the arms back as you describe, but not sure where the bent knees thing is coming from. The only time I've ever bent my knees in a track was on massive tracking dives and I had to slow/drop down to prevent myself from passing others in the group.
In my experience, you need to get out and figure out what works for you.

hughjars,
the bent knees slows forward speeds for flocking tracking jumps...allowing you to fly relative to different body builds. or it could be atmonauti.

That is my experience with that position.

Then there's the Harvey went just a tad head low and pulled the legs to keep from going over on a sub-terminal mini-track...

My very first post on a topic that I have a little knowledge about The above description sounds like atmonauti to me. Did the FF coach also advise you to bend at the waist? Atmonauti is designed to increase freefall time as your body is simulating a wing therefore your downwards speed is translated into more forwards speed and thus lift (not actually lift but a decrease in fall rate vs an increase in forward movement)
You know when you are in an atmo position as it all goes eerily quiet, speed is controlled by leg straight or bent as well as arm position... though I tend to use my arms to keep my body position at the correct angle whilst controlling speed with my legs.
There has been many discussions with skydivers as to whether it is a more efficient way to track. I am not a BASE jumper yet so can't translate this tracking method to that environment. It is however my favourite skydiving discipline and it slows my terminal speed to 100mph, and gives the feeling of more hang time. Seperation is apparent when looking on the ground but more so when my canopy comes out and Im a fair distance away from other jumpers doing straight down dives.
A good way to experiment will be to set your audible at say 6k and track perpendicular to aircraft as soon as you exit. When your audible beeps mentally remember any landmarks you are directly over. You can do this all day long practicing different tracking positions not to mention different angles in the Atmo position.. may need longer than a day to perfect it. If you have got a camera on your helmet then all the better!
Like I said my BASE career hasn't started yet, body flight is my favourite discipline however and I thought I would just share my experiences in a Skydiving environment.

Take care!

Chris
