    Conviction in Parachute Attempt

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/04/ny...pire.html?_r=1

A stuntman who tried to parachute from the top of the Empire State Building on April 27, 2006, was convicted on Wednesday of reckless endangerment.

The man, Jeb Corliss, was seized as he climbed over the protective fence on the building’s 86th-floor observation deck.

Mr. Corliss testified in State Supreme Court in Manhattan about his expertise and the safety measures he had taken to prepare for the jump. He expressed surprise and disappointment at the verdict.

He could face up to a year in jail on the charge, which is a misdemeanor, although others who engaged in similar stunts have usually been fined and ordered to do some community service.

On the day of his jump attempt, Mr. Corliss was wearing a helmet topped with a camera to record his feat.

A former host of the Discovery Channel program ”Stunt Junkies,” Mr. Corliss said he had made more than 1,000 safe jumps from structures and cliffs in the United States and abroad.

The Discovery Channel dropped him after his arrest, saying it was disappointed by “his serious lack of judgment and his reckless behavior.”
