Here is the run down of the accident. This was at the cliff around the corner from my house. I was watching from the scenic overview (having run out to get mothers day bagels after dropping the crew off) Scott was wearing a helmet, as well as a spine protector, & knee/shin gaurds. No wind. He had a clean exit and it was a go & throw. Canopy opened 120 right, and looked to spin him into a 1/2 line twist. First impacted wall after about 2 secs, canopy continued to turn right, and clipped a 2nd time, and then about 20' off of ground Scott had swung out in front of canopy and impacted backside into a large rock, and then dropped to ground. The 3rd hit is what appears to have caused the head injury. Laying on the ground Scott's helmet was on and in place, and it is strange that he could have gotten the back top of his head bashed with it on, but is must have been knocked forward and them back .


There is no question that the helmet and protective gear saved his life. A helmet with better protection may have resulted in walking away instead of the head injury he received. I know that I am going to buy a better helmet as a result of this. Without his spine protector I will speculate that he would likely have shattered many vertebrae.

It is the one by the Blue Lakes course, but I have it logged at 280. I could be wrong though as I never lazered it.

I'm not sure of the brand of the helmet. It is the skate style that does not come down over the ears, nearly identical to my own and probably the most common I see used these days.

I haven't jumped it, yet, but I thought it was 280 to impact, 240 to landing...

I've jumped it only once, we lasered it at 240 to impact, it's not a great place to have an off heading for sure.

It's a jagged wall that looks fucking cool as shit in your peripheral and not so cool when you're flying towards it. This is the second cliff strike at this particular object. The first person was much much less experienced but got much much luckier.

I'll hope to go back to Boise and see Moose and Steph Wednesday...

Thought I'd heard or been told that the LZ was slightly above impact on a little rise or hill. Guess I heard wrong.

Oh, that's easy.

FWIW I would guess it is at least 270ft to impact with a very slight uphill landing to the left. This is merely based on my experience with a <1 secondish delay, a 90degree turn and a considerable time under canopy still until landing.

Like Abbie said though, its not a good wall to fly at. When everything goes right though, it's a great jump.
