BENNINGTON — Willard Van Wormer still doesn't understand how he got so lucky. A lifelong pilot from the foothills of the Adirondacks, Van Wormer, now 85, was a 19-year-old flying instructor for the Navy and Army, when he saw a girl standing by a fence at an airport near Binghamton, N.Y.
