There was a report on the Boise news channel last night (as well as in the Twin Falls paper) regarding yesterday's BASE-legality decision on the part of the Jerome and Twin Falls county authorities. They have stated that, inspite of the recent incidents with BASE jumpers, the activity shall remain legal, because they do not wish to "restrict personal freedom."
Having authorities place a premium on individual liberties is rather indicative of the philosophy held throughout the state of Idaho, as compared to many other places in the country. (I actually have a letter signed by Governor Kempthorne himself, which states that we may bungee jump from bridges in the state without police interference.) Nevertheless, the mishaps of the past year had in fact stirred up quite a big debate over this matter of legal jumps at the Perrine and Hansen bridges (which is why the issue was just again taken up in Twin by the local officials).
As the new season approaches, it is incumbent upon each of us to continue to jumping carefully here (and elsewhere, of course). Also, please don't forget the protocol of notifying the local police { (208) 735-1911 } prior to enjoying your day.
See you there,
BASE # 360
