This past week I went to a legal jump site in Utah and found some idiot had been there. Along the trail to one of the jumps there are some petroglyphs and some idiot had carved what I believe is thier BASE number in the wall! What the F*** were you thinking?!? It is idiots like you that get our legal jumps shut down! Those petroglyphs are part of our history & culture and are there for everyone to enjoy, not for some idiot to think it's cool to carve his number right along side of it!! Yeah, no wonder our sport is looked upon real highly!

I hate to get this wrong, but I was pissed, so I can't remember FOR SURE, and I didn't have a camera with me or I would have taken a picture of it. But I THINK the number was 420. If anyone else has seen this and knows the number FOR SURE, please correct me. I would hate to put the blame on someone who wasn't the idiot!!

Apparantly I need a hint - because it's not at the exit point and it wasn't there 2 weeks ago - so fill us in!! But whether or not it is a BASE number - whoever did it was still wrong!

Just my guess, but it isn't a BASE number. Just tell any stoner you know that the time is 4:20 and they will probably laugh, then pull out their pipe or bong and proceed to "pack a phatty". Most likely this was just some stoner who tripped out when they saw the cliff wall with the other carvings on it and decided it would be cool to add their own. Don't blame every number on us, especially this one or (666) for devil worshippers. This is just a hint for you, hope it helps. By the way, you can probably find out who carved it in 9 days by going to this spot around four o'clock that day, cause every stoner also knows April 20th is a heavy smokin' day. Just remember, for everyone who observes 4:20 on 4/20 it happens twice that day. Better stock up!!!

What gave the original (ummmm) Posters on this wall the write (pun intended) to inscribe....Though I think if someone did do Graffiti, they are screwing us non graffiti jumpers..... How many years does it take graffiti to become petroglyphys,The EFS spraypainted on a wall in Yosemite in 1980 is screwing with us to this very day.
Why can some persons do it, and it´s called art, and others do it and it´s a crime.....
They were there, and had the right to scribe,
This is human/animal nature to mark territory. I really hate it also...But with an Earth Population of 6 billion I do think it´s ludicrous to make it look like no-one lives here.....
I am pissed by every cigbutt I pick up hiking, but where is the middle ground?

I have seen graffiti in a couple of popular BASE jumping areas and I am relatively sure it was not BASE jumpers who put it there. 420 is pot smoker code for "it's time to smoke" and the other stuff I have seen is somewhat more BASE and climb related; one says "jump this" at the bottom of a cliff that is not very tall and not even vertical, the other one is on the trail to the Tombstone and says "climb this" at the bottom of a rotten and loose crack. I think these are all just kids scratching junk on the rock and it's not done by a BASE jumper. I feel that you have done a good job of making everyone aware of a problem that needs to be addressed. Specifically, the BLM and NPS need to be made aware that it is not BASE jumpers doing this vandalism. I believe in my heart that we all know better than to vandalize any rock, especially in an area where petroglyphs are present.

To Tracy - It's 6 billion, not 6 million. Your skewed logic evades my sense of reason on this issue. I do not feel that in the year 2000 anyone has the right or a reason to carve on anything. The ancient's did not know any better; we do. The fact that it is an age of modern environmental enlightenment should be reason enough not to permanently mark anything. So don't even think of carving or scratching anything in the wilderness, man. If you want to be artistic with some individual graffiti, give yourself a tattoo.

UPDATE ON DEFACEMENT - Today Mario and I saw the # 420 scratched on the rock on the trail to the Crown. I am resonably certain that it was not a BASE jumper that did this. It was probably a group of local kids who hang out in that area. I will have a talk with the BLM about it and we will keep an eye out to see if we can catch the person who is doing this. This kind of thing really bugs me. I leave for the canyons tomorrow. See ya later.

Gee wiz, we all know that B.A.S.E. jumpers never smoke pot...who the hell else would be up there besides climbers? A B.A.S.E. # would be too easily traced so...what's the next best "cool" thing to defile a national treasure with?

The date 4/20 is one that will always be remembered here in Colorado. It is the day that the shootings happened at Columbine High School.

Moab is in close proximity to us here, about a 6 hour drive. It is quite possible that someone marked the wall in memory of this very sad event.

Point taken Bazil....I had forgotten. Now we have TWO sad reminders of that day. BUT, the memories of that day will someday recede, that blasphemy on the wall will be there forever.
