Just wondering if anyone else out there has been lucky enough to find any fog underneath their object? Out here in 'A' land (MN) we get several fog opportunities a year, especially when all the snow is melting off. Last week at a local 1100 footer, at 4 am, the fog extended to about 200 feet. The jump was a blast; the landing was a bit tricky but not if you know the area real well. I was packed and on the top again 2 1/2 hours later and this time is was light out. The sun could not be seen from the ground. I broke through to clear and sunny skies at about 500 feet, the fog had built up quite a bit. The pictures are absolutely awesome! I will try to get them posted on the picture library once I get them scanned. Once on top I could see the fog back extended from horizon to horizon. The wind was dead calm and the temp was about 50 F while on the ground it was a frosty 30 F. The tower below disappeared into the fluff. I was waiting to hear "fee fi fo fum" (a jack and the bean stock reference). I exited, pulled just as I was entering the fog, and could see the shadow in front of me on the clouds of my packjob hitting the air and canopy deploying. I could see the sun disappearing above and to the left as I descended into the fog. The ground came into view at an altitude of about 30 feet. The landing area is all snowy farm fields, mostly clear from any obstacles.
Anyone else have any fog stories I would love to hear about them.
One thing, I don't recommend jumping into low/no visibility unless you know the landing area and potential dangers extremely well and you have a full flight plan all the way to the ground. If you do, go for it, it will be a jump you remember for sure!
Life is good,
