Security Clearances and BASE

Does anyone out there have a US Gov't security clearance that was issued with the Gov'ts knowledge that you jumped? I'm faced with this situation now and the interviewer is your typical BASE-hating whuffo. Any help please?????? I'll provide all the gory details here on the board after I find out the verdict. I currently have a Top Secret clearance. I have held it for over 13 years. During my last 5 year interview I had to admit that I had been "busted" BASE Jumping. Frankly, the interviewer didn't seem to care much. I didn't have any problem with my clearance review and still retain the same level. What you should try NOT to do is to expound of the specifics of BASE Jumping. If you haven't been "busted", there isn't even a reason why you should inform them that you participate in the sport.

I'd be careful how ANYONE responds to this post....I know for a fact that BASE # 704 was just sent out last week, so I highly doubt that 90 other people qualified for a # since 704 did 4 weeks ago...if so then my apologies and welcome, if not then who are you trying to be???? I doubt you'd get a serious response in such a public forum anyway. One of my BASE instructors works for the CIA, maybe he'll email you in private...if you can find him!

If this guy is for real or not doesn't matter. There are no secrets here. As far as the investigations go...it all depends on how and if you are prosecuted after being arrested and how honest you are about it. You MAY be Ok once, but if you get caught illegally BASE jumping again you may loose your security clearance. In my case, I was forthright with them and this precluded any further investigation. I am still BASE jumping and keeping it legal. Especially now.

You can also call the Defense Investigative Service. They can give you more information.

I hope this helps others out there with clearances.

i made up the base number because i don't want to give my name away yet. this post is for real, trust me. i just had a chat with Fred Morelli, so call him and ask him about the authenticity.
either way, i've now got to explain the details of my base activities in the past for the interviewer, who is not base friendly. it anyone is going to write about base, then i'd rather it be me and not the interviewer. i'm just looking for some stats and such to calm my nerves. no arrests ever, but i've base'd in illegal places. any other suggestions? should i keep my official writings for the interviewer short and sweet? many thanks. i've got tons more to tell you all....it'll come in time. this has only strengthened my fight to gain legal access....and yes that means the big park!

My previous job required 'secret' security clearance. As luck would have it, I was 'randomly' selected for the full interrogation. Neighbors were interviewed, former employers, etc. When I finally sat down the the interviewer, we went over everything non-base. When we were done, I asked him specifically about BASE jumping and if I was caught trespassing, reckless endangerment, etc. This isn't an exact quote, but this is the gist of what he said...

"We're looking for evidence of something that a foreign nation could hold against you or bribe you with. If you're a drug addict, frequent prostitutes, an alcoholic, all of these things could compromise national security. We have given security clearances to convicted murderers, after we deemed them not to be a risk. If you are brought up on charges, and you inform your local security officer, the report will be reviewed. But I can tell you that if you're arrested for trespassing after jumping off of a building, you are not going to get your security clearance removed"

As an added benefit, I had the fortune to be on a jump where we were caught, but one jumper's concern over his security clearance prompted the authorities to let us go. In that case it helped....
