January 21st, 2002 I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. I am not a base jumper, but i like thrills and am planning a climb up a two hundred foot antenna in my area. I am plannin on doing this in about 5 months, so i have time to reasearch it. I plann on using carabiners and such, but my biggest concern is electricution. Does anyone know how great the risk is of getting electricuted when climbing these antennas, and other general information would be helpfull.
January 22nd, 2002 5 months? It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.
Your biggest concern shouldn't be electrocution but boredom. This a 2 hundred foot ladder. If you fall you may survive only to die of embarrassment later on. You could always use a helicopter to attach a pulley and a bag of sand (the weight of which exceeds yours), and a rope to the top of the antenna. Clip into a harness at the bottom and then try to dislodge the sand bag by throwing pototoes at it. Even better get some plastic tube and fire the potato (be sure to use an entire potato - custom made potato slugs don't count) using a blowgun technique (more exhausting but worth the extra effort in my mind). When the bag falls you'll race up to the heavens like a...erm... circus freak on the end of a rope. :o

January 22nd, 2002 You're only real risk of electrocution is if the Antenna is an AM transmitter. This is easy to determine. If the Antenna is isulated from the ground with a large glass type ball. Then you may want to consider sex outside of marriage - its funner and just as exciting.
Do not pee from the antenna! Or poop.

January 22nd, 2002 Look for information on fall arresters or "via ferrata" if you're really interested in protection. Short of clipping into every step as you go along, it's hard to set up a good system of protection using just ropes and carabiners.
But, as someone else said, you're basically talking about climbing a 200 foot ladder. It shouldn't take very long to climb. If all you want to do is climb up and have a look, and if you're reasonably comfortable with heights, then you might as well just bomb up it without gear.
Why are you waiting five months to climb it?
There's also been a fair amount of discussion on this board about the different types of antennas, and their respective dangers. Try a search for "antenna" on the base board, and if you take the time to sort through some stuff which is irrelevant to your interests, you'll find what you're looking for.

January 23rd, 2002 Obviously never climbed one before eh? You get warm enough on the way up. Wear gloves, even if warm enough to protect yoru ""fragile"" fingers. Even if cold or warm, they help. anyways, 200 feet is nothing, as stated before. Sure, it may kill you IF you let go. You wanna let go? Didn't think so. Don't phuck around with safety gear, and just go climb the bitch. If you're worried, pull out a ladder and practice. Can you hang on???? OKay, enough said. Just go do it. If you aint jumping it, it aint much to worry about. CLimb it at night though. 'nough said.

January 23rd, 2002 yeah wear gloves or you'll have knarly blisters and the worst thing is the climb down.
