I found a new A close to me and it's peaking over 500 ft. Nice location, good landing area, and descreet. There is a sign of course that says "Caution RF High Level Radio Frequency Energy Area." There is another sign indicating it is owned by a popular radio broadcasting company. Anyone know if this is an AM or FM? I don't see any special grounding connections on the guidewires or the base.

If this thing isn't going to zap me, this might be a beginning to a beautiful relationship.

    Thanks in advance!

I personally would have already jumped it, if it differs in no way from a regular antenna; but im used to freestanding am antennas which make themselves very obvious (particularly if you get to close). I assume your being extra cautious because its owned by a radio company--I say its FM, clearly, but martian bob has that website that you can look up an antenna from its call sign and what not. someone should post that shortly. Otherwise look for stupid looking objects at the base, like a massive set of rings one through the other, or wands sticking up away from the base, insulators which may look like a glassy black substance within the interior of the girders at the base or as a plate or pad under the contact points. If the antenna is mounted on a big concrete pillar you might want to check further also. Or you can graze the tip of your finger across the antenna if your looking for a little excitement. But if its by itself, the description you gave is FM. Enjoy...ps (Ill jump it first if you insist)

This tower is resting on a cube of concrete about 3 foot all around. Atop that are about 6 cylindrical pipes about 1 foot long, in a circular pattern, standing on end. They kind of resemble anchor bolts, but I dont remember seeing nuts or threads on the ends. Atop that starts the main structure where the 3 legs divide out and support the lattice. Anyone seen this before?

I have a seven digit number that I got off the side of the first section of lattice. Could that help?

There are 3 or 4 other smaller freestanding ones in the same field, so no it's not alone. ???

crap, its starting to sound am, but I cant visualize the description; you said it had guywires, right? Can you download a picture of the base? Even if it is am you can still jump it if the base set up would allow you to jump on to it cleanly. Like get a stable wood or plastic object to stand on next to it then jump on to it. take the call signs to the local yellow pages to see if they operate an am antenna, or get martian bobs website to check it.

By what you said about three other smaller towers in the same field. I would assume AM. I have some questions about this site though.
#1 Are there any antennas mounted to the tower toward the top?

#2 What kind of building is at the base of the tower?

#3 Can you see any coax cables running up the tower? If not. Do you see any ladders with rungs at about 4' seperation about 2' wide with holes punched in them?

If you want to email me the owners name. I may be able to help you just by the name.

This site is really helpful. It gives a lot of info on each tower, but I am finding it hard to figure out still if it's AM or FM. Which stat indicates that? And what would it say? Thanks!
