    Just curious as to what makes a good BASE jumper...I know its probably the holy grail but there is a train of thought(where i live) that if you pop your local "a" 200 out off 250 that makes you a good jumper...any views?????:o

    What makes a good jumper:
    * A non-Ego attitude!
    * Extensive rigging Knowledge.
    * Hundreds of 7-Cell skydives on the peas each time.
    * Courage to walk down.
    * Understand your limits.
    * Never care what anyone else thinks! EVER!!!!
    * Having the brains to alway wear protective gear!
    * Always asking as many questions as possible.
    * Experience to know why sub 300' is a bad target object for low-time jumpers.
    * PATIENCE!

    Dude I could go on forever about the stupid ##### I see every day. Then all the injuries I hear about from those being stupid.

    Or what about a low-timer hanging out with some experienced jumpers that are not taking responsibility by telling the low-timer what they should not try. They lead by example, not by vocal help. Then the low-timer gets into bad habbits they are not qualified for. Then the so called "Cool" jumpers "FLACK" the low-timer for getting all busted up; when it was the experienced jumpers that kept their mouth shut that are to blame.

    Everyone get's lucky, and sometimes very often....But sometime, someday, and at the worst possible time. EVERYONE'S LUCK RUNS OUT.

    * Be ready for you luck to run out.
    * Be ready for that 180 off the 250' or 450' tower.

    * Dress for the crash, not the jump.
    If you don't, then when you do crash, And you will, You will break bones, loose much skin, loose your eye sight, loose limbs, loose movement in your body, get plates, screws, new titanium vertabrea, metal rods, pins and who knows what else.

    I think that it's wrong to just say this. With current gear, a PCA from a 250ft bridge with wide landing area and no obstacles is far safer for a low timer than a higher object with smaller landing area/hazards.

    Yes but craig i think what mick ment as is here in Oz a freefall -250ft narrow landing area and obstacles .

    people are doing it .

    Sometimes it takes smashing your self-up or a mate killing himself on a jump or another getting away with his life on another to make you stop and think ...............

    I have seen very few low time jumpers that actually have the base-jumping knowledge to know the difference from a 250' bridge with an open landing area, good exit,

    vs.

    A 250' bridge with a medium landing area, turbulant winds, 10 DEG slop landing on asphalt

    vs.

    A tight narrow landing, wind sheer, crosswind landing, opposite crosswinds at opening altitude with 1 car length to land in.

    My point was simple:
    The smartest thing every jumper can do, is stop. THink. and climb down if you do not know 100% of the elements and issues about the jump you are about to make.

    Even if you "think" you may be missing some information. Climb down.
    If you don't have your protective gear, you are not base-jumping smart at all.

    One year in Norway, I encountered 2 major accidents that could have been avoided:

    1. A guy was jumping with no helmet and no pads at all. He had some riser cuts on his face, and was told repeatedly, by several different jumpers, that he really should wear protection and play it safe. He ignored everyone. Then, the very next jump, he has a cliff strike in short pants. He gets cuts, bruises and road-rash everywere. HE also got a concussion, but that got worse. He broke the globe of his eye socket and severed a nerve. Guess what? He lost his sight forever.

    2. A girl and a group arrived to jump. They told another group that was going to the end of the hike (2hr hike), that they were only going halfway for the first jump (1hr hike). Guess what? Nobody spoke up to tell them they should not go to that exit on the first jump as it is much more difficult. So they jumped. And one girl had a cliff stike and ended her trip on the first day. She was "Lucky"! SHe did not break anything major and got away with some cuts and bruises.

    My point(s):
    * If you have knowledge, "SPEAK UP NO MATTER WHAT".
    * If you don't have enough knowledge, don't jump. The object will still be there when you are ready. Even if that means waiting a couple of years.

    The Pacific Northwest BASE Association has some thoughts on this question, and as the official spokescanine of the PNBA I've been asked to share the party line.

    PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A PATHETIC ATTEMPT AT HUMOR. DON'T DO THIS STUFF OR YOU WILL DIE. THIS IS A JOKE, AND EVERYONE SHOULD NEVER BASE JUMP ANYWAY AS IT IS DANGEROUS AND A BIG WASTE OF TIME ANYWAY AS THE GODDAMNED WIND IS ALWAYS BLOWING OR SOME OTHER SH!T SO JUST STAY HOME AND EAT POTATOE CHIPS WHILE WATCHING TEEVEE OK? There.

    Good jumpers all share some common characteristics:

    1. Good jumpers heal fast and don't whine too much about small injuries that don't involve colostomy bags or neurosurgery.

    2. Good jumpers can stand up to peer pressure. Like, say, when the entire load decides a jump is too windy/underhung/dodgy to go, a good jumper is man enough to say "piss off you dress-wearing girlies" and jump anyway. If all of your friends were too lame to jump off a bridge, would YOU not jump as well? C'mon.

    3. Good jumpers have good lawyers. There's no better way to beat a trespassing charge than to throw a bigshot attorney at the case. "Nuff said.

    4. Good jumpers know that wind is your friend. Sure, we all talk about being "winded out" and stuff but that's just sissy talk for a dramatic lack of cojones. Good jumpers know that landings into the wind are much safer so the more wind, the safer the jump. Some good jumpers are even soooo good that they can land on one foot, ballerina-style, and pose for the cameras balanced right there like a little dancer. And they have flowing golden hair, too and funny accents and call car trunks "the boot" and so on, so the image really works. Sorry got off on a tangent there. . .

    5. Good jumpers know that most accidents in BASE occur under a fully-inflated, fully-functional canopy. Thus, being under canopy is really dangerous. Therefore, the safest way to jump is to smoke the crap out of each and every jump. Less canopy time = less injuries. The logic is unassailable.

    6. Good jumpers are never afraid to push their mates to do things way beyond their ability. How else do we progress if we don't "step out of the box" sometimes, right? What better way to get out of that 'ole box than to have our "friends" forcibly drag us, kicking and screaming. That's what friends are for.

    7. Good jumpers know that excess safety gear is just a panacea for a lack of cojones and, worse, a lack of confidence. Do you start your day planning to get cancer, and wearing all sorts of "anti-cancer clothing?" We don't think so. Why, then, wear "anti-crash" crap when jumping? It is counter-logical. Good jumpers KNOW they won't flail and pound in (they are good, remember?), so they don't need pads and pads and pads on every extremity. Besides, injuries heal but the humiliation of looking like a wannabee gladiator at exit point, that sh!t lasts a goddamned lifetime.

    8. Finally, good jumpers know that the only reason to wear a helmet is to have a place to mount your camera. No good jumper would be caught dead with a camera-free helmet, ever. And good jumpers use only crap-ass helmets as "camera mounts" just to show their mates they aren't planning to hit the cliff or some other dumb-a$$ stuff. Again, why plan for mistakes instead of just avoiding them.

    In summary, the good jumper knows his limits and knows that transgressing those limits on each and every jump is the only way to Keep the 'Danger' in BASE. And, without danger, what is BASE anyway? Well, it's like falling into a swimming pool but without the clorine and sexy swimsuits, that's what. And who needs that?

    Peace,
