Hang on to the toggle when you cut the line? :-P

But I guess the other hand was on the other toggle countering any input from the lineover?

    Glad it worked out.

    Yo Tom,

Glad you dealt with it any which way but a quick pointer. After downloading 20MB I realised there must be something wrong with the link. Either that or you videoed the hike as well ;)

Yeah, I mean who does an exit count from five anyway? Could've shaved at least two seconds there. :-)

Any chance of a real time version too?

I've had a few spinning mals recently on my skydiving gear, and have got used to cutting away from these things.

When I switch back and forth between tandems and regular skydiving, I am pretty careful to go through the emergency procedures for the set of gear I am currently wearing. It's not that I don't think I could figure it out, just that I don't want to waste time trying to remember what I have on my back, and how to deal with malfunctions with that set of gear.

Anyway, the first thing I thought when I saw photo #1 was, cut away! This underscores the need, for me, to review emergency procedures before EVERY BASE jump (and every skydive).

Congrats on dealing with such a nasty malfunction. Not too many of us could calmly do what you did.....then again, I bet many jumpers are now reaching into their gearbags to dust off their hook knives. I always carry one on all BASE jumps, high or low. You never know.

As for a solution, I believe the new toggles sold by Gravity Sports or Vertigo would solve this problem. I have one set and I'm going to purchase another "just in case".

Hopefully Farmer McNasty, who's field you landed in, wasn't watching! He's just a bit anti-BASE, but I'm sure if you showed him the video he'd let you slide :P :P :P :P It's not like you had a choice in the matter.

    Tom:
    Now that's pucker factor!
Nice recovery, I hope I will perform as well if needed, but more importantly, I hope I don't have to.

    Questions:
Is that the same Troll as in your review?

Your landing looked pretty good, all things considered. What wing loading are you at, how did you flare, i.e: toggle and riser, both risers, any other comments on the landing, MSL, etc?

I hope "without". The tailgate is not to be used with a slider up configuration.

I'd say, CUT AWAY, PULL THE RESERVE! This is said with the assumption of jumping a SORCERER, which is the BEST two canopy BASE rig I have ever had the pleasure to bet my life with. Peace out,

    Yo !

Tom, you rule. Don't know of anybody else who has ever managed to successfully use a hook knife to clear a line-over on a base jump. I'm also very happy to see how high you have pulled ;-)

W.L.O. toggles are MUST-HAVE! Please, call Vertigo and get a pair or two. They are THAT GOOD.

    Jesus Tom! Nice work!
But I couldn't view the video. The shots were great and all but couldn't you have zoomed in a bit more so we could have had a better idea what the lines looked like? Its not like this happens very often ya know.

    .................

Seriously though, I have noticed that many people are just now beginning to warm to the idea of trying out Marta and Dennis' toggles. Not sure if this is the case here with Tom but this is just my advice:
IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE RIG DON'T ONLY GET ONE SET OF THESE NEW TOGGLES! GET A SET FOR EVERY RIG!!!!
There is no sense in using the old toggles anymore in this sport. Don't think that you will just simply try them out on one rig. Just upgrade to them now for every rig!

I've had two line overs on mesh slider up base jumps, and I've been lucky being able to clear them before impact. On the first, I just kept pumping the brakes every time I'd face AWAY from the tower, in case I fixed it I would have a lot of horizontal translated speed. I lost a lot of altitude doing this. On the second, I pulled down as hard as I could on the side that was pinched off, enhanced the spin, but got it to clear after only one hard spin. I don't believe its a neat packing issue, but still is a gear/packing issue. I believe the multi helps, but moreover, stowing the brake lines to a tab on the rear of the slider is a significant safety improvement, really only notable for longer delays, IMHO. My only concern about the WLO toggles is that they require two hands. Normally, you would counter with the other riser to maintain a heading instead of concentrating with both hands on a single problem side, most likely enhancing the spin rate. I like the WLO toggles from what I've seen, though. I think I need to make some skydives on them and do some releases to see how effective they really are. On another note, I've always wanted to sew a small hook knife and pouch on each rear riser. Not so big you can cut the riser in half... The advantage is that you don't have to look down and find something. You just keep looking up and keep assessing your canopy options, hopefully while maintaining a heading.

    Party 'til impact, Chris

    Yo !

Correction: WLO toggles require ONE hand. This is why i consider them far superior to any other designs. I have fired both simultaneously immediately after opening just to get used to them - it's an instant and very natural move. In a real-life scenario you will be countering a spin with one hand and firing a toggle with another. If i understand correctly, Gravity Sports toggles require two hands - if this is true i would not buy them.
