I have a Yardage Pro 800 compact. It's the best I've found yet. Just push the button and read the distance. Easy bro'.

I use a Bushnell YP600 Scout -- very small, accuracy of 1 yard up to about 600 yards, simple operation. The downside is that it doesn't have a backlight, but there are ways around this.

Hey -- anyone else noticed excessive battery use on a YP600? Spence and I have noticed this, but my bro's YP600, which is newer, doesn't seem to have the same problem.

I have the bushnell yardage pro golf model #20-0002. as others have mentioned, I wish it were backlit. there are ways around that, though. Works really well as long as you're shooting something that is reflective. Sometimes it is hard to get shots on soft things like trees and leaves from long distances (like from a clifftop to a vegetative groundcover). My latest use I was finally able to get a range of ~ 950 feet bounced off of leaves/undergrowth after several clicks of the button. For the urban environment where there is lots of concrete and ambient night light I've had no problems.. works great for cranes.

as to excessive battery usage.. YES!!! I have developed a habit of always removing my battery if I'm putting it away. I suspect it's because the button gets pressed when the thing is packed away in its little carrying case and you're moving around-like a cell phone mystery dialing. I've only had it a year and bought 5 batteries for the freakin' thing already. removing the battery after use has fixed this problem for me.

Cranes and other wading birds are currently in the off season and should not be jumped. Shooting them with lasers is ill-advised unless you want a run-in with the DNR.

Shotguns make a bigger hole in them anyway.

Without a doubt go with the Bushnell Yardage Pro 800. It has just about everything we (BASE jumpers) need in a rangefinder. The only thing that it is missing would be the inclometer. It's good up to 800 yards on non-reflective materials and 900+ on reflective stuff. not too many places you'll need more distance than that. My personal experience with it, I had no problems on a moonless night getting a reading from 610 yards (down). Plus it's accurate to +-1 yard. If your jumping something that needs to be more accurate than that then you might just want to use a 200 ft spool of kite string! Minimum distance you can check is approx. 18-20 yards. It's backlit, which was my biggest selling point. I scope most of my sites out at night so this comes in real handy. It's easy on the batteries too. I've had mine for almost 3 years and have only changed the batteries once, and that was because I put in used batteries to start. You can find this model for anywhere from $200 - $350 (US). I paid $215.

You should come down to NC and jump, it was a balmy 20degrees the other night. Of course if it gets too cold I could go back and do that indoor jump again!!

not terribly cold. a low of 10F the other night. a trio of us clubbed a crane last night. found it standing in the middle of the street - and with nobody around - WHAM! WHACK! WHACK!
