Hey...we haven't had a BASE competition in North America since July 2001. It seemed that interest dropped off here and Malaysia is the place to go.
Any chance of a revival? :+

SPence, Clint here. send me your email address! Info about comp.
Spence,
It's always about the competition with you. I don' think you would still be poop'in if you weren't trying to lay the biggest cable. So, I guess the only way to get you out doin stuff is to challenge you to some kind of competition ... ok that's fair ... How about let's see who can make the nicest belly cast of a pregnant lady with the least amount of vaseline
on all four objects - BASE style!
A competition sounds like a good idea my friend - Can there be a missionary category!
Cygnus
Missionary Man
Might be a $$$ meet in Moab in Memory of Bill Frogge. Maybe! If.... things happen, like an accuracy thing. NO dates or no anything, just a nice thought that jimmy and Marta had.
Have a new dagger next monday, thank god. No more gear fear.
Also I just borrowed Jimmy's camera and I'm making a Vhs tape of the Can trip and turkey boogie. Send me your address and I'll send you a copy of the vhs copy. Not the greatest quality but I only have the camera for 1 night, I was lucky to get it for 1 night.
Hey Missionary Man, you could try the accuracy thing, if it happens.
Peace,
clint
BASE comps suck!
Why donæt you organize a boogie or a party for BASE jumpers? Comps just ruin the jump. How often do you land from a BASE jump and say, "that jump sucked!" because you did not stomp the disc?
IMHO, BASE and comps go together like buckshot and peacocks...

I think buckshot and peacocks go together rather nicely! Those things are always attacking you and sqwaking and chitting all over the place.
Besides JJ, I think you're just bitter 'cause you CAN'T stomp the disc!
However, I tend to agree, if a BASE comp ensues, it should be an original one, not accuracy or aerials...in fact, I think the prizes should be awarded for a non-BASE related kareoke contest! Or perhaps some other sort of talent show. Or I guess it could just be a raffle of some sort...
What do you call Moab then, with the IPBC stuff? Tombstone challenge isn't it? I can even read the announcement for that in Skydiving Magazine. You only went to the "competition" that was held at a unique site. So, did you try Bridge Day or Moab yet? I thought those were "competition opportunities"? Or did you just not like what those comps were? A little more info would be great.
Is it IPBC comps you want? Skyventure (Malaysia comps)? PDX Comps? Aerial Comps? Opening comps? Landing comps? What would interest you for a competition like the one you went to did?
Or are you just complaining without offering a suggestion?
How about we have a "Labatts Drinking comp", eh?
The July 2001 comp you speak of has had some interesting effects, some of which we are still suffering from.
Have you not heard of the great Moab comp before? IPBC has run it for several years now.

If you post the information, you may get a couple of other people to show up, as well.

A valid thread. I believe some of the reasons for no comps now in the US was a lack of interest due to cost and a resentment within the community towards elitism in the sport. This debate has ensued for years.
I participated in many IPBC events and learned a great deal. The comraderie was the greatest reason for going. I believe the entry fee was a big factor in curtailing interest as several of the objects were readily available to jumpers any time of year. If the objects - such as "big greenie" had continued to remain part of the circuit I am sure it would still be running strong today.
The Malaysian SkyVenture event is successful due to the unique objects. This is an important ingredient to gaining a large competitor field. Out of 60 jumpers last event only ten would be really trying to win - the rest enjoyed themselves and focussed on a placing in a category.
To run a comp is expensive. There are so many hidden costs associated and there is a certain expectation by competitors. There is often little association for what goes on behind the scenes and the event from a competitors perspective. Few compliants and a good safety record are the best you could hope for as an organiser.
I completely understand why some of the key organisers in the past are taking a back seat. They became the object of criticism and political slanging matches. This wears anyone down. It's a shame because the comps in their "hey day" were exceptional and led to a great deal more testing and development in the sport. Communication between jumpers and the networking possibilities were great. I made many good friends in this way.
JJ's point is valid - comp's suck if you want to boogie. It is a different facet of BASE. It endeavours to make a part of BASE a sport - away from a stunt, adventure or extreme challenge. It is not an attempt to water down the spiritual experience. It is another realm. (Also - Don't get grounded and you'll have more fun)
I hope someone takes the initiative and starts something up again in the States - my advice would be - gain access to a unique object first - then you'll get the interest.

Ok, that was seriously funny Slim! :P
Man, you know when Slim grounds you for low-pulling that it was, indeed, a dictionary-definition "low pull." As far as I can tell, JJ successfully took the pressure off me for at least one day. . . which was a pleasant relief.
Slim, you still upset about that "slider down" opening on day one? If you are really nice to me, I'll teach you how to pack slider up so it makes that cool, smack-type noise :D
Peace,
