Crane saves man after parachute fails
Mon Oct 20, 9:40 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A parachutist jumping from a 145-metre skyscraper escaped death when his chute failed to open properly but got snared on a crane next to the building leaving him hanging, German police say.

"He got lucky after his initial misfortune," said a spokesman for police in the Bavarian capital Munich on Monday.

Fire services took an hour to rescue the 32-year-old Austrian extreme sports enthusiast after his base jump from the 35th floor left him hanging 45 metres up.

Police released the man, who is under investigation for making an illegal parachute jump, on bail of 450 euros (310 pounds).

Default RE: busted in Germany

it was not felix. both papers gave the same name, but it was not felix. but the jumper made the headlines for the two local munich papers with photo of the "B" in question, the crane, and the headlines:

"with parachute: student jumps off munich skyscraper"

and

"crazy jump off highrise building"

the content and tone of the longer articles in the papers (on the inner pages) were actually a lot better than one might have feared.

the thing that sucks most: the object is hot as hell now (obviously...)

greetings from munich,
flummi

Default RE: broken 3 ring system

hello!

i was jumping an vertigo warlock- 2 pin- container with an atair troll 265. after an 1,5 sec. delay, i deploy stabil and symmetric. the wind was nearly zero. (46" pilot chute -not vented)
my friend was standing on the exit and wait for his jump. he said: "your pilot chute was oszillated very strong and turns the canopy 180° when came out from the container"
i had a very nice opening, but in the wrong direction...
i try a turn with my right backriser, but it was to late- i hit the skyscraper. the cannopy collapsed. i`m fighting,etc.-no chance
sekonds later, i was falling down quickly and some lines are arround my body.
45m above the ground, two a-lines stop my fall. they are hanging on a part of an cran.

ad 3 ring system: while i hanging i see, the right front and backriser are away from me (ca. 0,5m). the cutaway cable was into the loop.
i don`t see it exactly- broke a ring or the risers? this time i had have other problems...
by the rescue, i do an cutaway- the risers are on the cannopy
my cannopy is in germany in this time. i hope, i became him back quickly- then i can check all things exactly

greetings,
miko

Hi miko,

you must have had many guardian angels that night ;)
It'd be quite interesting to hear what exactly you're now accused for and what the consequences are (provided that you don't mind to tell us...).

Wow - glad you are okay. Is there any chance you could provide more detail on your riser/3ring/cutaway cable problem? Were you packed with the slider tied down? or off? or what? Do you have any idea at what point the riser separated? This is concerning.

Take Care,
Gardner

High Guys,

I was accused for §59 and §60 of the german aviation law. I don't know the exact text of it. but it contains something like: "...illegal use of a registered aircraft..."

@Gardner: I packed my canopy slider down. I still cannot give you further information 'cause my equipment is still in Germany.
As soon I get it back, I will join an expert, who's gonna check it with me. Afterwards I will release a detailed statement on: www.basejump.at

greetings, da bastards}(

http://www.luftrecht-online.de/

LuftVG § 59

That's the official text. Roughly translated:
§59:
(1)If you (the pilot) are contrary against the aviation regulations and thereby endanger life or (pricy) property of others you can be penalized to up to five years of imprisonment or a fine.
(2)Who acts negligent can be penalized to upt to two years of imprisonment or a fine.

§60:
(1)Who flies an aircraft without permission can be penalized to up to two years of imprisonment or a fine.
(2)Who acts negligent can be penalized to upt to six months of imprisonment or a fine.

Well, I guess although I tried, I didn't stroke the juristic translations for some terms but maybe you can understand it nevertheless (feel free to edit and put it into proper juristic English ;-) ).

I'm really curious about the final judgement...

Bear up miko! :-)

bye
Nic

Ironically, here in the good old USA, our court system has determined that parachutes are NOT considered aircraft on NPS land.....otherwise, we'd be safely flickin' at Lake Powell right now and landing on that big wet runway.

Good luck Miko.
