    BASE Cat Burglar

Below is a story out of Japan including a few local whuffo responses. What BASE jumper hasn’t considered (at least for a moment) using his BASE rig as a getaway vehicle . . .

“Parachute-Wearing Burglar Carried Out 550 Break-ins in Japan.”

    Saturday, November 15, 2003

“Japan — A 26-year-old burglar who wore a parachute on the job is responsible for stealing 100 million yen worth of cash and goods in 550 cases of break-ins across Japan, Ibaraki police said Friday. Noboru Ohashi broke into residences by scaling the water pipes of apartment buildings since 1996 until his arrest this March. Police said he told them that ever since he fell from the fifth floor of a building he had taken to wearing a parachute when carrying out his crimes. “

    Nessie (Nov 15 2003 - 09:59)
“If he had fallen again, he would have discovered that it takes far more floors than five for a parachute to open. “

    Murgi (Nov 15 2003 - 10:37)
“Aside from being 50cm above ground when the parachute opens (at best), he'd a meter away from the wall. He'd better use a reinforced umbrella that doesn't turn over like during strong winds... but he'd need to open it in a fraction of seconds to land with half the normal fall velocity. “

    Tetsukon (Nov 15 2003 - 13:56)
“You guys are wrong. The parachute would have covered his dead body quite nicely, saving passing people the horror of seeing his stupid dead body.”

    Injya (Nov 15 2003 - 22:02)
“This guy was twice dumb! Once for being a criminal and secondly, for not knowing that a jump of less than 100 meters has a high probability of less than full deployment of the chute, assuming of course that he could get his act together and pull quickly. Then too, with bad body position it is likely that the shroud lines would be actually as named.“

    Velly Intelesting,
Whuffoes seem almost in the know ;)
I did not recognize the name as a jumper, but for sure the last name means Chopsticks in one of its 6 intonations.
    Take care,
