You are right. If he has an accident, then no one is around to help him. What about a gear check? It is always safer to get a gear check from another jumper than yourself.

I did create YourSOS.com for the reason of people going alone. Because even though I think it is a very bad idea to go alone, people are still going to do it.
Maybe you consider YourSOS.com to help protect him when he is alone.

Ok just from a girlfriend's perspective I think that he shouldn't go on a solo jump because of something happening?! Right? Or should he because he just wants to go alone?! I don't quite understand. I've been told that you should never go alone. What's your opinion? Please respond, I'm confused and kind of upset. Should I just let it go and hope the best, or try and talk him into letting me go to. I've been around BASE for 2 years and he's jumped solo once when I wasn't around?! WHAT TO DO?
    A concerned & confused girlfriend?!

I can see a lot of fairly good reasons not to have your wife/girlfriend/significant other as ground crew.

Have you considered asking him to use you as "virtual" ground crew? He could tell you where he was going, call you on a cell phone when he got to the bottom of the object (or when he left home) and then call you again once he's landed safely (and/or gotten safely away). That way, he doesn't have to worry about you (on things as varied as "what if I get my girlfriend arrested?" to "what if she sees me go in?") and he will be more focused on making a safe, successful jump (which is important to both of you). If you don't hear from him in some pre-arranged time (I usually allow about two hours, depending on the object--obviously some take more time than that), you call 911 (or perhaps other BASE jumpers, depending on his preferences and your understanding with him) and send the cavalry out to wherever he was jumping (please don't get in the car and drive out there yourself--that thought will just conjure up all the same worries in his mind).

This is what YourSOS.com does. A virtual ground crew. You should go take a look at it. I have spent the last 12+ months developing this on Enterprise class architecture.

    Hi Joyo-

Yes, this is a valid point. Ask Stefan Faber in Denmark! I luckily had some excellent companions with me when I had my accident, so I didn't have to lay at the bottom of the object with a severe injury. The cell phone is an amazing tool, just ask your boyfriend to keep his in his pocket the entire time he's doing the solo jump. "Spotting" him or "virtual ground crew" should be mandatory between the two of you if he prefers to go alone.

    I haven't checked out the yoursos.com thing Mick mentions...but I certainly will!

    Take care,

I have been running ad banners on BLiNC for YourSOS.com, and would love your feedback.

I think every base jumper should get this thing.

I love to do solos (even after watching Fabers video of his solo that went wrong!). Although I have used telephone groundcrew I have on occasion gone without a soul knowing where or what I was doing. This can be personally satisfying and although the risks attached to this may be deemed unaceptable to some, I think that if someone is fully aware and wishes to do this it is wrong to say that they shouldnt. We all do this for various reasons and sometimes you may not understand why they want to do certain things - but its for them.

Sometimes I wont jump if I cant get some people together - othertimes I will go solo - it all depends on my mindset at the time.

My girlfriend would not want me to do solos but she would also not tell me "no" - she allows me to do my thing - she has groundcrewed and I like that she is there, but she also understands that sometimes I need to do "my own thing".

Dont be confused or upset - just let it go.......

    What ever happens - happens.......

hey there and a merry xmas

There are many reasons to do solos.the reson i do them is to feel TOTAL free at the hole proses(climb, gear check, jump and the drive away).Your bf might have another reason but im sure that what ever he sees in it it makes it a great time to him.

There are many ways to make a solo safer than you might normaly would think of. heres what I do.

1.when i drive to the object i let my "phonecrew"know which object i attend to jump and when.(this is usaly my gf)

2.i tekst/sms as i start the climb, and tell how high i will go/how long time i estimate it will be before ill be at exit point

3.after my gearchek and ready to jump,i CALL the gc thell them (1)the altitude i jump from. (2)which way i jump(werry important to rescue if needed).

my phone crew will from that point give me 15mins to call back,in case i dont... 911,the location will be told the dirrection i have jumped and a estimated range whith in the object were i can have landed.

4.After landing i call back(this can be done easy even while running),tell im ok from the jump.

thing i have in my "first aid kit:

a light(red) easy to show eventualy resuce were you are located( i use a small light, that gives alot of light and is water resistant(will post a pic as i get home from xmas holidays)

    morphine/Tramadol/tradolan just in case

always wear a belt not only to keep up my pants but also so i can stop big bleedings

ohh i jumped once after i had forgot the cell in the car... the 2,5 hours laying on the feild whith a open fracture seems to get me to NEVER forget my CELLPHONE

Mike i tryed to mail you but dunno if you got it,any way i never got it back.
I dunno if its my poor english that i dont understand how it works (yoursos),how ever as i understands you will notice the system as you leave home and again as you get home.. if thats the case then its too long time after my oppinion.(just my local object will mean a react time at 1,5 hours as a minimum, not somthing i can use(it really hurts to lay there in the cold/dark alone. But as said im not sure if i understand the system.

    Safe new year to evryone.

Solo jumps have got to be the most gratifying when it all goes well.
but..when it doesn't, it's the most selfish thing any jumper could do.
I spun in by myself almost 5 mos. ago. it affects everyone who know and love you.
My divorce papers were filed earlier this month too.
don't believe it when your special someone says "it's ok", they don't worry, they don't want to tell you "no" or how to live your life............IT'S ALL BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just not worth it, but jumpers will continue to do it! Hell, I'll probally end doing a solo again, one of these days. Just hope for the best.
I believe it's the "ego" that will seperate the individual from the rest.
    It's a vicious cycle!
    be safe out there.

Hucklberry,im sorry to hear about your loss, but i dont totaly agree.

First of all i think a solo is as ego as jumping whith others. We all take our lives/health in our hands as we jump, and a jump whith others can go as wrong as a solo, your just more lost at a solo if somthings happen and it aint preparede(ie,if your unconcius you aint helping your self much,in that weiv it would be nice to have a buddy arround)it will go wrong no matter if your alone or people are around.

When i had my acsident nearly 1,5 year ago,i had just divorsed my wife 6month earlyer, but had a girlfreind(which car i used to get to the site). She did as i had told her,and she still does the day today.

My gf standed by my site all the way in the troubles that follows, and she is still here. She is still my phonecrew as i do solos, and she will do the things over again if nessesary.
She aint happy that i do solos, but she also know that i get that lithel extra when i do it..

I DID loose some "freinds",but hey if your freinds cant tell you that you fucked up,and then afterwards say ok lets move on,are they realy the freinds you want?

You can be sure that thouse who really care and loves you will be around even while they dont understand why your doing this...

I WONT recomend any to do solos, but hey i dont even recomend people to BASE.Im just doing what i love,i hope the rest of you do the same:P

no matter what dont injury or kill your self out there;-)

Yes I agree but then again I beleive doing the sport full stop is a selfish thing to do........ although I have explained things to my family / non jumping friends - there is a certain amount of selfishness in risking your life for something only you have benefit of.

I am sorry to hear this had not worked out for you - and I myself have had GF's where they "understood" my skydiving and more recently my BASE jumping - but in the end they hate the fact that they can not compete with something like this. Saying this though my current girlfriend truely is "one in a million" and has no problem with what I do - in fact she incourages me to make jumps as she can see the positive effect it has on me afterwards. Sometimes she groundcrews sometimes she does not - I can never foresee that this attitude from her will change - who knows maybe next year I will post that "ITS ALL BULLSHIT" - but sometimes you can find that one person that truely does accept you 100% for who you are and what you do.

I rarely do solos - but the pure solo is the most satisfying things I will do in my life.

Why "ego"?? Do you think that its something about your ego that makes you do solos?? Sorry I dont understand what you mean by saying that?!

    You too fella!!

A SAFE NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YA!!!!

funny #### that some people will date a person who does somthing most others dont do,then as it starts to be a regular daylifestylie they dont really like it any more...

but the true people out there, that will stay whith you no matter if you BASE or give it up to golf, tennis or other like.

If a person gives up at you becours you have to balls to deside what to do in your life and when... well in my eyes your better off whith thouse people..

    so sentimentimal:-)

hehehehe! so true - they like the fact you do something other than sit in the pub and watch football and go out drinking with friends and actually get off your ar$e and see the world - but then it becomes unsettled for them and their friends think you are treating them badly coz you keep coming home late or plans change at last moments - their friends are jealous of you coz their own Boyfriends are out getting drunk and with mates down the pub - so they encourage your GF that you are treating them like $hit!!! The thing they like suddenly becomes a problem!!! Hypocrites!!!!

Whoa!!! Now I am reliving the bitterness of the GF who says "i like what you do!" then turn on you!!! hehehehehehehe

    "ITS ALL BULSHIT!!!!" hehehehehehe
