OK!! Bridge day was great! Had a great time! Now I need info on how to start base jumping in the new england area. I have a base rig with a raven 4 loaded at 0.71 and have already started looking into upgrades. Any contact info would be appreciated as to good sites for a new jumper (225 skydives – 2 bridge jumps)

CAN'T BELIVE IN THIS DAY AND AGE PEOPLE STILL WANT TO JUMP THIS KIND OF ##### CANOPY. SURE THEY WORK, BUT WHEN IT IS ONLY YOUR MERE LIFE AT STAKE AND WITH HIGH QUALITY BASE SPECIFIC EQUIPMENT READILY AVAILABLE, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO USE A RAVEN?

ITS LIFE JUMPING A ROUNDY FOR A POND SWOOPING COMPETITION.

Dude calm down. I realize that the raven is SKYDIVING canopy and not a BASE canopy. It worked well at the bridge, but lets agree that a mojo is a much better choice. That’s why I said I was looking into upgrades (i.e. A BASE CANOPY) but hey, thanks for the flame and all the useful info.

no offence taken, good to see you realise this. This sport is too dangerous though to patronize people, the flaming is hopefully to help your own self preservation.

good luck in the sport, & I hope you enjoy a new CR, or BR canopy. Vertigo I personally do not know

youll have trouble soliciting help of this sort on the baseboard, best thing to do is try all the dz's in your area for local basejumprs. face to face helps alot...otherwise this sport is about confidence in yourself and persistence in seeking contacts. you might call one of the base manufacturers they typically sell and know basejmprs around the country. if no luck, it kind of boils down to how bad do you want to jump and will you actually go climb a thousand foot antenna (packed slider
up to track away from object) or get into a big skyscraper, and actually take your own risks without guidance. if not you need to take a course from cr, br, vertigo, gravity sports, etc to get
info and guidance and confidence...careful, theres more to the sport than just jumping off, freefall is not the place to learn them...

Yo dude! Ever think about affordability? maybe that's all the person can afford right now. I jump a Raven III and am quite happy with it. I bought it brand new & had them install the tailpocket at the factory. I am a dealer for Precision so I got the best price I could from them. When trying to put together a low cost, safe, reliable B.A.S.E. rig, a Raven in a Vision is a good way to go.

p.s. your rantings would have more credibility if you had to guts to sign your real name to your posts.

    Hi,

I know that I think differently to a lot of other people and I'm certainly not always right but my theory is that price should never be a reason to compromise your safety. If you would feel a lot more confident and safer under a BASE specific canopy then in my opinion you should save up, get a loan, ask Santa or whatever else you have to do to get one.

Imagine hanging on a cliff thinking "If I'd bought that Fox/Mojo/Dagger I'd have made it out of that 180 and the amount I'm about to pay out in fines and rescue fees would have paid for it 3 times over" Nice thought eh?

Tune in next week kids. Bring on the flames baby!!

    Hi Pete -

    My two cents:

Posting on the board is not a bad idea. You might get a response, and if not, nothing lost.

Also get out to every DZ within reach and seek out people there. Sometimes it takes persistence (more than one visit) but it is worth it in the end.

Don't be discouraged if you meet a group of BASE jumpers and they don't take you out right away. Taking on a new BASE jumper has responsibility so sometimes you must get to know a person first.

Maybe offer to ground crew for them or just hang out. Once jumpers realize that your serious about the sport, they will almost always welcome you into their clan.

In the meantime (and afterwards), skydive the shite out of your Raven 4. Practice flat turns, deep brake approaches, and practice your rigging. Another great canopy drill is learning to bleed off altitude in deep brakes instead of bleeding it off through turns. Most BASE landing areas are in a 3-D environment and you cannot afford to turn all over the place.

Anyway...these are a few things you can do and it should get you started in the right direction. I highly encourage you to take this path vs. going out there and trying to figure things out on your own. If you do this, you can expect to get maimed in the first 100 jumps or so.

    Hope this helps!

    C-ya,

    Bryan

Yes I have a real name, unlike you by the sounds of it BUTTMAN. The comments were not directed to personally insult anynone, so I cannot see the weight a name carries in this instance, it could have come from anyone as most people are clear about the importance of Base specific equipment. It was put on there for the person to question some basic aspects which advancement in the sport & technology have brought to us. I do not know them personally & probably never will lso my name will be irrelevant.

Maybe when you stop using pseudonymns your name will carry some weight. Anyway as anyone with more than one jump will realise utilsing BASE specific equipment is the only serious way to approach this sport. If the flame helps, well it still helps so that is the important thing.

no offence guys, but in the old days a raven canopy was "a great base canopy". and i think that quote was from dennis mcglynn. "base specific" equipment arrived at the same time people figured out they could make money from base. part of business is to convince the consumer to buy. by telling someone that theyre gonna die or be injured if they dont buy the logo brand name specialty item is part of business. its kinda dishonest because it isnt necessarily true. raven worked great in the 90's and it would work just as well today. provided that the canopy is appropriate to the jumpers weight and in good condition i imagine that more fatalities in base are due to poor judgement in evaluating the object, the weather, the delay, the manuever more than their choice of proven canopy. of course if a person gets the confidence to overcome gear fear by listening to the marketing techniques of base manufacturers, they probably will have more attention available to evaluate jump variables and thus be safer, so maybe youre right after all...
