Man Parachutes Off Millennium Wheel

LONDON (AP) - A Norwegian student reportedly parachuted off London's new Millennium Wheel after sneaking past guards.

The Sun newspaper said Arne Aarhus, 24, climbed the 450-foot-high wheel in the early hours of Saturday.

His parachute opened after 65 feet and he landed safely on a footpath, in full view of a surprised guard, who did nothing to stop him, the newspaper said Monday.

``It was the perfect jump,'' The Sun quoted Aarhus as saying. ``I was able to climb up a ladder on the inside of the wheel. It was very scary as it was wet steel and the higher I got the more obstacles there were in the way, and it
started to curve.

``The view was awe-inspiring. I could see miles up the Thames, and Westminster looked beautiful at night.''

Police said they had no information about the incident.

The wheel is the fourth-tallest structure in London. It was hauled upright Oct. 17, and its 32 passenger-carrying glass capsules will open to the public on the millennium eve.

Yesterday I caught a teaser for coverage of this jump, so I tuned in. It was great. The news reader told where and when but not who or why. They used stock footage of the Ferris Wheel and there’s no footage of the actual jump, the jumper isn't interviewed and they basically have nothing! I love it. Just a picture of a Ferris Wheel, the fact some one parachuted from it successfully, and the perplexed looks of the news readers.

Get in, get up, get off, and get out!!!
