In the past, the prerequisite has been a minimum of 50 freefall BASE jumps.
Here's the information email that I got from E-mail@AveryBadenhop.com

The IPBC will start the year, once again, in Moab.
The "Tombstone Challenge" will begin on March 7, 2002.
I need to have all my ducks in a row by February 5, 2002.
So, that is the deadline for competitors.
If you would like to compete this year,
please register by Feb. 5, 2002.
Please mail your registration fee to:
The IPBC
P.O. Box 2507
Petaluma, CA 94953
The fee is $250 per competitor.
(After Feb. 5, WILL BE CONSIDERED LATE, add $50 to the fee [=$300]).
Prizes, awards and trophies, and a cash purse (minimum $1000) are up for grabs.
We will also host a BASE Trade Show in Moab this year.
The IPBC will headquarter @ The Moab Valley Inn.

If you haven't gone before, you'll want to email Avery and ask about prerequisites, etc. I know that my first year he wanted a "jump resume", with number of jumps, object types, and people I had jumped with (for references).
I personally think the Tombstone Challenge is a GREAT opportunity to meet jumpers, learn by watching some very experienced people, and have some fun.

thanks. Ouch, though; they want personal references? You mean I have to be, like, cool? Um screwed...;-)
Hello -
I'm sorry, but thinking that you have to "be cool" or part of a "crowd" is a misconception.
The reason organizers ask for personal references is to verify that you have sufficient experience for the venue that your trying to be a part of.
For example: The Tombstone Challenge is far more demanding than say, the Snake River BASE games in Idaho. Both are IPBC events, but one while one is from a span with a very forgiving landing area, the other is from a 380ft cliff over sharp talus. So naturally, an organizer must "screen" people prior to the event.
I'm sure you realize this and your above post was probably just taking a jab here and there...but I felt like posting a response so others may realize that these events are open to anyone with the basic skill levels for the particular site.
Competition BASE-jumping certainly isn't for everyone and I don't mean this in a condescending way, but I tell you what...I have learned a ton at every event that I've been to. It's made me a much better BASE jumper, I've met lots of really cool and fun people, and have had the time of my life spending 3 or 4 days with other folks that like me, love to BASE jump. It's a win-win situation in my book.
So to all my BASE brothers and sisters out there who haven't been to a competition yet: If it interests you in the slightest way, I highly encourage you to check it out. And if it doesn't, no worries, I hope we cross paths one day and share a quiet jump or two together.
C-ya,
Bryan
I was being funny, but the emotion icon didnt print. You have an excellent reputation; it would be an honor to jump with you and the other grave-stones at tombstone. Ive jumped this cliff often, so I dont look upon it as unusual. If the cliff were 280 freefall, id be checking references too, so thats why 'personal references' looked like an attempt at humour. cya at tombstone, looking forward to doubling my base references.:P
