A couple of questions from a curious non BASE jumping skydiver...

Are there any regular BASE jumpers who insist on doing only legal jumps?

Is it possible to jump all 4 BASE objects legally? - I've heard of legal Building jumps (didn't Tom Sanders organise something in Singapore or Malaysia?), obviously Bridge Day, and cliffs like Kjerag and Angel Falls, but I've never heard of a legal antenna jump.

I would guess there's a big grey area - lots of sites where jumping is successfully kept quiet and the legality has never been tested.

Maybe I'm weird, but I find the thought of being arrested, tried, or imprisoned much more daunting than the physical risks inherent in BASE.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

    Hey Geoff...

I don't know anyone who INSISTS on doing only legal BASE jumps, but I do know that BASE can and has been done legally.

    As far as I know
Moe Viletto is legal BASE #1.
Jan Davis and I also have legal BASE, however, I'm not sure if we're legal BASE #2 and #3 or if there were others.

All these jumps were done with full knowledge and cooperation of all property owners.... many times with autograph sessions, police protection, and catered lunches at the site.

I'm curious as well... anyone else out there with legal BASE?

I'll take my jumps legal or not. Keep looking UP!

    Tom Sanders

Yes - plenty of people living or spending enough time outside of US ;-)

Actually, in many countries it would be very hard or impossible to earn "illegal" BASE!

I backed down (all the way from the top) from the crown jewel of base jumps twice before I finally got enough beta to do it safe from a bust.
I now have some legal and very fun sites within weekend driving and much prefer them. It takes soooo much of the fun out of my jumps to be more concerned about being busted than surviving.
You're not weird. You just don't base...

Unfortunately, there are some of us for whom the risk of getting caught for ANYTHING--no matter how minor (or misdemeanor)--is too great. My job is such that the smallest criminal offense would leave me without a career the next day. "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen"...I can't assume the risks, so I avoid the "kitchens" of the world. I guess that makes me a "legal BASE only" jumper, so if anyone knows of any legal B's or A's in the US (Malaysia is not is my budget), I would appreciate the info!

Getting legal buildings, bridges and cliffs are easy in the USA. Out side the National Park system base jumping is not illegal. As long as you don’t brake other laws like trespassing or reckless endangerment you are doing nothing wrong :)

I know this because I have been busted jumping 4 different building in 3 different counties and the worst they were ever able to get me for was a $30 fine for mischief. In Vegas they got me for jumping a building that I had been staying in. The first thing they said was "you are in big trouble". I looked at them and said for what, I did nothing wrong :) They then proceeded to tell me how I was trespassing and going to jail. I then pulled out my room key and said sorry sir, I have a room, therefor I am a paying customer and I am not trespassing. He then told me I was endangering other guests and that was why I was going to jail. I smiled and said no, sorry again :) I make sure to film the ground underneath me before every jump to make sure there are no people underneath me. I then film my landing area and the ground between the two to make sure that if I do have some kind of malfunction no one will be hurt but my self. Therefor I was not being reckless nor was I endangering any one else’s life. I also have the video to prove this in court if you really want me to have to sue you for harassment :) They asked me if I was a law student and then let me go :)

Know your rights and remember, Base jumping is not a crime, so stop letting people think it is. Any time you ever hear someone say base is illegal make sure you correct them. Especially if it will be put on TV or on a forum where the world can see :) It’s important that we start making people understand that we are not doing anything wrong and that we have a right to live or lives the way we choose. We are people living the dream of human flight…

    Thank you Jeb!

BASE-jumping is Legal in the entire world, including the National Park Service. Out side the NPS, you need to have permission to jump. I.E. not tresspassing! So if you are NOT tresspassing, you have not broken any law except those of permit regulation like the NPS.

In the NPS, you need to obtain an aerial Delivery permit, and yes, one does exist!!!!!!! The only problem here is that this legal permit, is NEVER issued under any situation! Denying law abiding activists from following the law that the NPS has created! Change the laws as you see fit.......
Now in other countries, Yuri is very true.....
¨It is hard, or even impossible to get Illegal BASE¨.

I hope to get my Legal ¨B¨ this Feb.

    Thank You

    Hi Jeb

What you say is the case. However. Once the property owners get the shi_s with BASE jumpers jumping off their buildings (or whatever site it is), all they have to do is put a sign up saying BASE jumping is specifically prohibited from a particular site. From then on, it does become a more serious offence. Whilst you may get away with your technique, it does make it that much more difficult for others to follow.

It also makes it more difficult when the property owners take greater measures to stop people from jumping their sites - i.e razor wire fences, increased security surveillance, patrols, etc.

Throw a legal loop hole at the authorities and they more than likely will close it off. IE BASE jumping is against the law everywhere.

However, you can get permission to jump off objects, where everybody approves. It is difficult, but if you are planning higher profile jumps (i.e daytime with crowds involved) you should go through this process. Otherwise, help out future BASErs by jumping buildings etc at night.

eg El Capitan, Troll Wall, Bungonia Gorge in Oz, and a whole host of other sites.

    CYA

    Have fun
