Check out this story about the NPS whining for more money.

    http://www.msnbc.com/news/428214.asp

In particular, the Punks want a "one-time" $3million expenditure on security upgrades in the Washington DC area... roughly THE SAME AMOUNT OF TAXPAYER MONEY THEY'VE BLOWN CHASING AND PROSECUTING BASE JUMPERS.

Get your priorities straight, "gentlemen," and maybe you won't look like such whining weenies.

The article in questions deals with the issue of access, and in the Nazi Punk Service's typical discriminatory way, it has lumped BASE jumping in with snowmobiling and personal watercraft, both of which are internal engine-ppowered machines that make a lot of noise and pollute the air.

The anonymous whining weasel author (there's no name on the article) tries to make the point that watching a skydivier plummet past the face of El Capitan creates a "carnival0like atmosphere," which is pure horseshit to anyone who has ever seen someone jump from El Capitan because the sheer size and majesty of the monolith is _accentuated_ rather than diminished by the momentary presence of a human being in flight nxt to it.

The whining weasel propsgandist who wrote this naturally made no mention of the "appropriateness" of people hanging on the walls of El Capitan and dropping huge piles of ##### and other garbage at its base.

Neither did this weasel comment on the absolute coarnival created by the legions of RVs belching smoke and noise, and vomiting bozos who wear street shoes while posing for pictures on slippery rocks next to raging rivers (the weasel didn't mention the "appropriateness" of letting these wilderness-ignorant bozos off the pavement).

dan, I appreciate the steer to the site, but lumping BASE together with motorized vehicles is a disingenuous joke, and serves only to magnify Nazi Punk discrimination against BASE jumpers. Not a single argument holds any water.

As for the individual conduct of certain BASE jumpers... you know, as with the bullshit gun laws the Clintonistas and other totalitarians keep trying to push, there are many many many laws already on the NPS books for dealing with inappropriate conduct.

If jumpers make a spectacle of themselves when they land, charge them with disorderly conduct. If they spray-paint rocks, arrest them for vandalism. Al the half-assed excuses the Nazi Punks come up with for discriminating against BASE jumpers are rooted in the same mentality that made Bull Connor and his ilk infamous for their ignorance and intolerance.

You wanna ban motor vehicles from Yosemite Valley? Fine. Do it. It is entirely appropriate to prohibit or limit motor vehicle use in NPS units. It would NOT, however, be appropriate to limit only those vechicles that belonged to blacks or Hispanics or homosexuals or Democrats or BLM employees --- and that is precisely what your Nazi bosses are doing...

And if you did ban motor vehicles inside the Valley, it would sure be easier to then let anyone who _walks_ in with their BASE rig jump the cliffs and enjoy them in ways similar to the way climbers and other wilderness athletes have enjoyed them for decades.

\Of course, even a senior ranger like you, Dan, is still probablay too young to remember when climbers were harassed and arrested for _climbing_ El Capitan and other walls in Nazi-occupied territory.

That discrimination and ignorance finally came to an end, and has been handled in different ways by different Nazi-occupied areas

HOWEVER, those arease it by MANAGEMENT, not PROHIBITION.

Check out the different ways climbing is handled in different
NPS areas. Yosemite requires back country permits and not much else. In other units, there are climbing schools and so forth that have met with significant success in reducing the number of death, injuries and rescues/recoveries.

There is no rational, logical, intelligent reason to prohibit BASE jumping in Nazi-occupied areas -- except Nazi reasons.

    Period.

And 10 or 20 or years from now (if the federal government even exists then, all the Nazi Punks who have so zealously pursued BASE jumpers will look just as stupid, bigoted, ignorant and Neanderthal as Bull Connor and all the other racist thugs who thought giving equal access and rights to blacks was an "inappropriate use" of America.

And that's the issue here, Dan -- America. The national parks ARE America, and what's most amusing to me about the weasel who wrote that article is that he probably climbed back into his Winnebago and drove off in a cloud of diesel smoke as he ruminated on how "inappropriate" it might be to have a human being flying next to El Capitan with the peregrines.

Which reminds me: Have any of you guys ever seen the skydiver who jumps with his pet peregrine, Frightful? Check out Norm Kent's movie. The bird loves to skydive and fly with people and Norm has filmed that bird in a way that has never been accomplished by any nature photographer anywhere, ever.

If you and the Nazi Punks who give you orders would just drop the Bull-headed bigotry you have toward BASE jumping, you might actually come to find that it's not only a completely appropriate park activity, but one which truly enhances and highlights the beauty and wonder we all seek to preserve and enjoy.

    Love,

    Robin

    Robin,

The link to the access article was from the National Parks and Conservation Association web site (Not the NPS, or by anyone from the NPS). The editorial was written by Kevin Collins and is published in the current issue of the association's journal in the Forum section.

The NPCA describes itselfo on their web site as:

"The National Parks Conservation Association is America's only private nonprofit organization dedicated solely to protecting, preserving, and enhancing the National Park System. NPCA was
founded in 1919 and today has more than 400,000 members.

Established more than 80 years ago as a watchdog for the National Park System, NPCA continues to be at the forefront of:

    * national park protection,
    * battling damaging projects at individual park areas,
    * fighting national policies that may harm all the parks,
    and
    * working to incorporate safeguards that will protect the
    future of our national parks.

    NPCA--Protecting Parks for Future Generations"

As you can see, this is an independent advocacy group that wants parks to be run as they feel appropriate, much like the BASE community. I must comment that Mr. Collin's ("The anonymous whining weasel author") writing is much less whiny than yours. And by my estimation, much more effective at changing minds and gaining support for his position. It is interesting to me that no else is commenting on your recent posts.

    Good luck.

    Your Yosemite Friend

Sorry, Dan, I looked for but didn't see Kevin's name on the article. Just a subtle semantic point here: I didn't say his writing was whiny -- only that he was a whining weasel for being anonymous. Since he was _not_ anonymous, I withdraw the epithet (I had to do this once before, when I called some guy a whining weasel because I read the subject line instead of his name (oooops). Where was Kevin's name on this article?)And his writing wasn't whiny, just misinformed, and certainly toeing the Nazi party line on BASE.

It remains absolutely disingenuous for him to lump a non-powered, non-polluting activity in with those that do pollute and make noise (you know, like driving winnebagos around Yosemite Valley).

Independent advocacy group? Right, like the republican and democratic national committees are "independent" of the Bush and Gore presidential campaigns.

And naturally you'd like Mr. Collins' writing better than mine; he doesn't repeatedly point out the bigotry and disinformation and illegitimacy of the premise and policy which you continue to uphold because it's "your job."

As I've suggested before, check out Thoreau's "On the Duty of Civil Diobedience" and you will find the passage: "As most men chiefly serve the state with their bodies and not their minds, they are as likely, without meaning to, to serve the devil as God..."

I commend you for having a dialogue with me here. I hope it continues -- and I think if you ponder the nature of most jumper comments to my past posts, you'll know exactly why no one is "jumping" to your defense here.

    Remember the Alamo.
    Remember the Maine.
    Remember October 22.

    Peas and love,

    Robin
