Whilst researching the fatality list the other day (hey, somebody has to do it) something odd caught my attention.

    There have been:

Six fatalities in Yosemite (yes, I'm counting Frank).

    and . . .

Six fatalities from Norway's Troll Wall.

    And . . .

Jumping is illegal in both places.

    Coincidence?

It's my understanding that the Troll Wall is illegal to jump because of the risks that rescuers would have to take to get to an injured jumper. While rescuer safety is always a concern, I don't think it is nearly as strong of a concern at El Capitan as it is at the Troll Wall.

Is rock climbing the Troll Wall permitted?

    Climbing the Troll is legal.

However, the rock is very loose, and rocks come loose pretty often. This makes it rather dangerous to be in the wall, or with a chopper close to the wall.

I agree to that a cliff is more dangerous than a brigde, even a big cliff. But Yosemity, and Kjerag are jumped several thousand times, so I dont think the statistics are so bad compared to other objects.

When it comes to the Troll 5 of the fatalities happenedbefore 1987, very early in the sport. 4 of them had very little experience, Carl who was the most experienced jumper had under 50 jumps, wich is not very much according to the experience level acchieved nowdays.

BUT I HAVE BIG RESPECT FOR THE TROLL. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR SCREWING UP. ACCORDING TO ME IT IS ONE OF THE MOST DEMANDING BASEJUMP POSSIBLE TO DO. (thinking of stress, importance of a good and stable launch, good subterminal track, ++)

    Snakkes

Hey Nick, First of all thank you for starting the worst mistake thread. Second I was wondering if you could send me some stats on base for a statistics project I am doing. Anything will do. Openings, Injuries, Canopy Sizes, Numbers of Jumps, Just something I can play with. Thanks In advance.

For the record, Carl B. had 52 BASE jumps. It still isn't very many, of course.
