I know this question has been answered before but why would anyone use an untested, uncertified, variable strength tape as opposed to 80lb. break cord.
1) To save money - have a half beer instead of a full beer in the pub later. 2) I just prefer it - not a reason. 3) They find it more reliable - please give an explanation. I have made a choice to use 80lb. break cord for my first static line. Does anyone have any advice to the contrary. I wont change my mind but I would like to know why so may people choose to put their life in the hands of a untested material when they are so cautious about everything else. |

4) Electrical tape is available at most roadside convenience stores, but 80 lb break cord must be ordered from BR, Paragear, or some other specific source.
I'd definitely recommend using the break cord. Just because some crazy Aussie with a thousand jumps is using it, doesn't make it the right choice for your first, second, or hundredth static line. Generally, the people using it are closer to the edge of madness in other aspects of their BASE as well. So, until you're ready to defy reason, logic and common sense (by dumping at 80', pulling doubles off 180' objects, or tying your static lines with grocery bags), I'd say stick with what is tested, accepted, and working for everyone else. --Tom Aiello tbaiello@ucdavis.edu |
