URGENT: Go to BD Anyway

Dear BASE Board readers:

Our sport has a GREAT opportunity now to show what a vibrant dynamic part of America we really are.

Go to Bridge Day anyway.

Fly on the planes.

Stay in the motels.

Spend money in West Virginia.

The economic losses that community will feel because of BD cancellation will be enormous and they will be appreciative and forever grateful if we stand by them now as they have stood by US for the last 20 years.

More importantly, we need to set an example for the rest of America that we will not let thugs and murderers keep us from living the wild wonderful lives we have chosen for ourselves.

We have a chance to help LEAD the larger Bridge Day community by going to West Virginia even though the bridge is not open.

Avery, Dennis and Harry: Quit feeling sorry for yourselves and exert some leadership. Rally your people and get this show back on the road, in the sky, into the hotel rooms and all the other business establishments.

All of us who were planning to go to BD have ALREADY BUDGETED the time and money to go there.

The people of West Virginia need us to come anyway.

The people of America need us to come anyway.

So if you were planning to go, please go. Take Buddman's lead and plan a raft trip. Go for a walk in the woods.

Get to know the people of West Virginia. Get to know each other. Have fun.

But refuse to give in to fear -- and don't let the fear of others force you to stay home.

We can become ambassadors for living bravely, for helping neighbors in need.

So let's do it.

Robin, you jacka$$ ! Are you encouraging illegal jumps! If a bunch of BASE jumpers go to WV are they not going to jump???? I'm all for illeagal jumps but don't post and encourage it! There is no need to capitolize your name on everything that happens in our sport. Avery is just passing the word that has been passed to him. Let's jump somthing else!!!!!!

If you are going to stay at Holiday Inn, you should call and let them know; otherwise they will be automatically refunding your money. I talked to them today. I guess it wouldn't matter, though, since the hotel will not be full now. Just a thought.

Absolutely not, Keith. Thanks for further spreading the word. I think it's very important that "we" (the BASE community) go the WV and "show the flag" -- ours as adventure athletes who DO care about a community that has supported us so well for so long, and as Americans who aren't going to be cowed by cowards and killers.

And just to clarify for the kids out there: I specifically said that we should go to WV to support the community and do things OTHER than jumping.

We go there as BASE jumpers and as Americans -- NOT to go BASE jump!

In fact, the absolute worst thing we could do is go there and jump that weekend. That would be rude, disrespectful, irresponsible and utterly childish... and most certainly play right into the hands of the Nosepicking Prevaricators Society, which strongly opposed holding Bridge Day during both votes of the organizing committee.

The bottom line is: That part of West Virginia is a beautiful part of the world this time of year and there are dozens of attractions that may not be quite as cool as BASE jumping but will be worth the doing regardless.

And the most important thing is helping out the people of the New River community because they have really helped us over the years and they are REALLY taking a body blow from this.

I don't know the specific economics of the region, but I would speculate that the damage caused to their community by losing the $$$$ brought in by Bridge Day will be proportionately almost as bad at the economic hit New York City took when the buildings went down.]
