I am not a BASE jumper, infact I have only jumped five times. (and that was at the Armys Airborne School). I would like to climb a tower just to say that I have done it, and to get some good pictures. I looked online, and ya'll are the only ones who seem to do this regularly. My only concern is with the law. I know that some towers have security or monitoring devices. Are these common? Also, what are the consequences for just climbing?

The tower that we (my friend and I) are looking at climbing does not appear to be guarded at all. There is no gate on the fence around the tower, and it does not appear that there has been one for a long time. The area in and around the fence is completely overgrown, but there is a path and beer cans to the beginning of the ladder. Also, there is a business (open 24 hrs) about a mile down the road.

What do ya'll think? Any other advice.

    Thanks
    -Andrew

Trespass. Maybe criminal damage if the police think you forced entry. Generally heating up the object for other 'users'. Radiation, electrocution (do you know what kind of tower it is?).

If you're talking about getting some pictures that kind of implies you'll be climbing in daylight which has obvious drawbacks.

    Be careful.

well I would like to be sure that there are no jumpers doing this tower in the first place! - what sort of height is this tower? - if there is a possibilty of this tower being jumped, then I would say dont climb it. Perhaps try and hook up with jumpers (may take some time) and offer your help.

Have you looked for local BASE jumpers? If there are any, they might be able to just take you along when they were climbing it.

Where, in general, are you? The "y'all" makes me thing somewhere in the south, so there's a good chance you've got local jumpers.

I would say if there are local jumpers they could offer you some advice or even take you down there for a free show. I disagree with you staying away from it just in case BASE jumpers use it. We do not own any objects and you and your friends should feel free to be adventurous and have fun, climb it. We would however appreciate if you were respectful though and tried not draw attention to yourselves so we can all have free access to the fun.

I once heard about a couple jumpers that were climbing up a tower and were halfway up when they noticed they had company. The guys climbing up below them were hauling ass and they eventually met at the top, somewhat surprised of each other. The guys that came up last climbed this tower regularly just for ****s and giggles, and just so happened to get a little show that night.

Hehe I had a similar experience last night at the semi-local S. We waited for a long time for the local workers to leave, and finally it was dead quiet around 9 pm. We put the ground crew in place, and just when we thought the coast was clear, we discover this couple that decided to hang out at the top of the bridge. Judging by the dude's car he was part of the ever popular midnight-mountain-back-roads-racing clique. He only knew about two words of english ("Good Luck"). He seemed cool, so we invited him to the exit point, rather than leave him speculating and wondering if he needed to make a phone call!

Sorry for getting a little off-topic... maybe a new "random encounters" thread?
