More than once upon a time, a "writer" from some magazine approached BASE jumpers in a public forum, because they did not personally know any jumper. They requested a "free" story about death or mayhem or runs from the law or trespassing. They knew that such a sensational story would boost sales of their magazine, without costing them squat. What they need to realize is that BASE jumpers are a unique sub-culture who prefer to stick to their own, and know better than to give away private moments.
If there was any credibilty to topicmag's intentions, they would contact BASE jumpers in person, and offer a writing JOB, as in a paycheck for the writer. Then the jumpers would be able to negotiate conditions regarding the final edit content. That way BASE jumpers would avoid being constantly presented to the world as a lunatic fringe of death seeking law breakers. The End.
