I cant remember it. I have been reading blinc since '99. Was it before that? I did a quick search to see if I could jog my memory. No luck.
I've been reading this board since 1996, and I have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm pretty sure it was after '99, since I remember it, and I've only been on here since around '99.
Jesus dude, I cant remember my mothers b'day or middle name sometimes! I cant remember some situations I have been in unless I see the video (which I still sometimes dont believe) or have blatent photographic reminders........... your vague description has no chance in my small short minded alzheimers brain (another way of saying I have been on BliNC since around 99 too and it dont ring a bell with me!)
The "Purge" happened when the top six or seven threads were all giant flame wars with all of us bitching at each other. Someone (I don't know who) created a new login and used it to post a huge number of new threads which each had just one post, reading "purge". It effectively cleaned the bickering off the board.
This was shortly before Mick went to a required login system for posting.
I was thinking along the lines of the old saw about those who do not learn from history. If all we do as traffic ramps up here (again) is to let it devolve into bickering (again) I think we'll run into many of the problems we had before (too much flaming and not enough communication). I'm very interested to see how we do this time around.
>>I'm also curious to see how it goes this time around. I would suggest that if people want to bicker, they do it via PM and keep it off the boards as much as possible. If the flame postings get out of control or become unproductive, maybe a "take it to PM" PM from a mod would work. I guess the next step is just to lock the thread. I know alot of BASEr's like to bicker, but looking back some flame wars were downright hateful. For guests perusing the site for the first time and thinking of registering and posting, I can see why they might not want to. Ultimately for it to work, the community has to become somewhat self-regulating (sound familiar?). I think CrazyThomas has the idea.Originally Posted by Tom Aiello
Well, I was a moderator on a different sort of board, and we dealt with controversy as follows. As soon as a thread heated up, it was moved to the "heated-up thread" forum. Those who wished to continue their participation then had to go elsewhere to do so. This cut down on the bitching about "I didn't come here to read this sh*te; I came here to learn about or talk about <insert subject of group>." Later on, it became necessary to make consent even more explicit: the "heated-up thread" forum became the "password-protected, heated-up thread" forum. Pretty much anyone could have a password, but again, if you ask for entry, you have no excuse for bitching when the topic is "you suck" instead of <insert subject of group>. It's kind of like "usenet for the web" except that people who don't want to partake don't have to bother to killfile; they just have to remember to stay out of the flamewar forum(s).Originally Posted by Tom Aiello
Me, I don't like moderation. My view is that you have a perfect right to say any old stupid, sh*tful, dumbass, moronic, evil, nasty thing you want to say, and I have a perfect right to tell you what a stupid-sh*tful-dumbass-moron you are. I don't believe, however, that I really even want the right to prevent you from appearing to be one, if that's how you choose to be perceived.
But that's just me.

P.S. Will someone please explain to me the purpose of the profanity blocker on this board? It's just damned annoying.
I've been on several forums that have those type of "wasteland" or "open trash" forums. I kind of like the idea. One other thing I've seen implemented is a time limit on "wasteland" threads. They're only allowed to go for 2 days (or whatever) after being removed to the "wasteland."Originally Posted by rhondalea
In real life, I tend to agree with you. But on-line, you have to remember that someone (in this case Mick) has to pay for everything you choose to say. Since it's his dime, I figure that gives him an absolute right to tell any of us to STFU. When he delegates that power down to others, we (the moderators) have an obligation to follow his rules on what to allow. In a sense, he's made us custodians of his pocket book.Originally Posted by rhondalea
It's been here as long as I can remember. I think the idea is to keep discussions relatively clean in case a press source (or just an interested person) wants to read about BASE, or potentially quote the board.Originally Posted by rhondalea

There aren't constant personal attacks, no mindless chatter, etc.
Just news and opinions about BASE...
What a concept...
In all honesty, I think it's because the community is smaller, so the folks on the web site have a greater chance of knowing each other in real life.Originally Posted by baseninja

I think that the main reasons are that it is a huge old, flat Continent with fewer BASE jumpers.
They hang tight but they get into small pissing matches on the Aussy board but I don't think that any type of (flame) hot argument is tolerated and is immediately (stopped) censored.

Not a unique concept.
Just turn on the 5:00 News on American television ... for example.
You get a (one side) opinion and censorship of any public communication and opinion that is considered offensive to that agenda.
That....F##king SUCKS ... !
( just my opinion. please do not censor it )

I think you should take complete moderating control of the BASE board along with your moderating duties on DZcom. BASE zone.
Hopefully all that extra work will totally burn you out and totally turn you against the want and desire and need to care so much about what jumpers say or think of each other and Quit.
Then you would slowly sink into the sub-human bowels of crass voiced and low -life independent thinkers.
who really don't give a big, flip-flop, flying F##k how they appear or sound.
Then when you post your honest opinion or just a quick, Dumb-A$$ed, (half thought out) emotional thought and it gets moved, cut-out, split-up or just plain censored out.
You will say ..."This just F##king Sucks.".... As you are sitting back and thinking about squandered days of your youth and wondering how the hell you became like most everyone else.
