I have only just got my first camera, and I have been playing around with it. I have got hold of pinnacle (thanks 850) and found this easy to use, but slightly restrictive in its use. I just wondered what video editing software you guys are using. I have access to a macG4 and Imovie seems pretty easy and effective, but for general PC edit for some practice on, I wondered what is deemed the best for ease of use and effects and a good start to build on knowledge to build further towards more complex editiing software. Should I stay with pinnacle for the time being?

I personally LOVE pinnacle. I am not sure what version you have but I have pinnacle 9 plus. I goes as far as to use blue/green screen effects. If you do not have this version,it is worth the money to buy the upgrade.

Mac, I use Pinnacle 9 and for someone that has just started making videos, like me, you can get as funky as you like for a long time. I started on Pinnacle 7 and John taught me how to do the basics with it so 9 was real easy to get used to. One word of caution though, don't ever store vid on a VHS tape because you ran out of space on you mini DV and then record it back to the camera because the quality is horrible.

agreed on that point. Either save it back to DV or better yet save it full quality to an additional dedicated harddrive on your computer.

I'd skip the PC and just go with the iMovie. Simple, easy, and free.

Or, if you're looking for more power (and more price, or perhaps just more piracy), Final Cut Pro can do pretty much anything you can imagine.

I started with Pinnacle 7 because it is so easy. I still use it too but it can't do eveything I want. What I usually do is try to get everything I can in Pinnacle and whatever it can't do I use Adobe Premiere instead. I end up exporting the Adobe work (as MiniDV quality) and then I import it into Pinnacle. If you're interested in Adobe Premiere let me know.

edited for my horrible, first time 'round, spelling

My vote to Adobe Premiere. I personally use 6.0 version, but it has some bugs. Adobe Premiere Pro is good and looks pretty much like Final Cut for Mac which i'm going to learn. tThere are some good software for music and titles. For example Sountrack and LiveType for Mac. You can do some titles and sound effects using that stuff but some info may be losen during the import in Premier (6.0 not the best soft for QuickTime format).
