Going to Norway this summer! Looking at trip reports tells me the best time is June or July. I'm thinking June would be best. Anyone have suggestions or ideas? Anyone interested in going?

I'm going for the Heliboogie, which is usually in late June. From what I hear, July is the best time for clear weather, but why pass up the chance to get some rides to the top for more jumps? I do want to do the hike at least once, but I'd also like to make a lot of jumps while I'm there.

Hey ManBird! I'm with you. Riding rocks and walking is hard work! Do you have any info on the heli boggie or contact info?

Typically the most stable weather is in July, like the last 2 weeks. That's why BR always scheduled their Expedition for the third week of July. Last year we had a bad year, with lots of rainy days and even worse, Easterly winds. Hopefully this year the season will be more "normal".

If you want to make the most of your trip to Norway, I'd suggest showing up for the Heli-Boogie, then plan to stay for at least another 2 weeks after that. The Voss Extreme week usually happens right after the HBoogie, and then after that comes the better weather at Kjerag. If you are a jump-PIG, you'll be grateful if you stay as long as possible to get the most jumps from your trip.

I would also recommend bringing rainy day entertainments...whether it be your mini-dv tapes to have a video fest, a deck of cards, or a good book.

For those of you that haven't been there before, you might want to stop off at the Coop grocery market in Stavanger. There is one walking distance to the ferry that takes you to Lysebotn. Get yourself your favorite foods and plenty of beer, because there isn't a lot offered in Lysebotn, and what is there is quite expensive. I don't know if Douggs or Coombesy have any news about the state of the Cafe for this summer, but last summer many jumpers were distressed because they couldn't seem to get enough to eat. Those long hikes will take the starch right out of you, so a high carb diet will save your bacon!

Again, please visit www.basekjerag.com for news and vital information about jumping at Kjerag. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there!

    Peace,
    K

If money is an issue for anyone, then I would suggest taking as much with you as you can. EVERYTHING is expensive in Norway.

    $1 = 6.24225 NOK
    £1 = 11.9281 NOK

Would a Norgie like to post what the average prices are for general items of food and drink so we can see just how expensive it is for us - I cant seem to find a website with the comparisons at the moment..............

    Norgie answering..

A few items sorted by importance:

A bottle of beer in the shop (0.33l) = 11-15 NOK
    A bottle of Jack Daniels (0.75l) = 315 NOK
A bottle of wine (cheap) = 90 NOK

For a bar, multiply above with 3

Big Mac Meal = 65 NOK

You'll have to convert to US measurements yourself...

This should reflect the general price level in Norway.. I haven't been to Kjerag myself and thus cant quote the local prices there.

    A bottle of beer in the shop (0.33l) = $1.71-$2.33 / £0.92 - £1.25
    A bottle of Jack Daniels (0.75l) =$49.04 / £26.40
    A bottle of wine (cheap) = $14.01 / £7.54

For a bar, multiply above with 3

    Big Mac Meal =$10.12 / £5.44

I also found this with other NOK prices on it: http://www.ssb.no/english/yearbook/tab/t-0801-294.html

I may do a conversion to $ and £ a bit later on.........

I have to say, I went out drinking in Stavanger with a friend and we both spent £250 each ($477) in one bloody night..........

    Hotel room 900 nok

10 beers 650 nok on night clubs
    entrence 3 night clubs 250
    buy ladies drinks 500
    Night food 100 nok
all of this together would be like 2900 nok

Yes Paul, that must have been a hell of a party!

But if you guys want a good time in norway without spending too much, bring your own tent, buy food and beer at the supermarket, and avoid eating/drinking out. And instead of spending it all at the helicopter rides, the hike is one of the easier ones(for this size wall) and you will maintain a good fit. 3 hikes a day keeps the doctor away

I plan to go to Norway this summer. I will be flying into the UK around May 10th, and plan to stay in Europe until Mid July. I would like to do several sites including Kjerag. Does anyone have any advice as to where to begin with planning the trip (cheapest way possible)? If there's time, I'd like to make it to Norway, Switzerland, Italy, and France BASE sites (are there any other ones I should definetely make happen)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for all the help and information. I've made my flight arrangements, depart June 13 return July 4. Cost was $1011.83. My plans are to spend the whole time at Lysebotn. I'm still working on housing arrangements at Lysebotn. If anyone wants to discuss this in detail drop me an email, jellyfish321cya@hotmail.com
