    Hey guys ,

Is there anyone out there that has some info about pc's with outside handle ( plastic tube ) .

Is it ok to keep using them ?

Or should i lett them replace to the inside of the pc ?
I know already from a rigger that it's not going to be easy , so maybe somebody has ideas to change it ?
Or an alternative idea that maybe is better and easyer to change and use ?

    Thanks up front ,

    C-ya amigo's ,

Outside handle, inside handle, or no handle are all easy to deploy but the deciding factor is snagability. With some amount of canopy out you'll always have a chance of surviving so the number one thing to avoid in BASE jumping is a pilot chute malfunction.

The chance a pilot chute entangles with its own bridle to the extent it doesn't inflate goes down with the above choices . . .

The first time I heard "no drogue, no main" as it relates to Tandem skydiving I thought they ripped us off. When single canopy BASE rigs became normal it was, "no pilot chute, no beer . . ."

Buy a new one Vs. tearing the one you have apart. You can get them w/ an inside handle if that's what you are comforatble with.E

there is a post on here by Neil UK about putting a free "practice type golf ball" in the PC.
Please bear in mind I am no expert on this.
I "modded" my external handled F1-11 38" by removing the handle and putting a practice golf ball (wiffle ball?) loose inside the p/c. Worked fine for me for 20 jumps or so. By then I got fed up trying to find the thing when packing the p/c that I took it out and don't bother with a handle at all now. Maybe no handle is worth a go?

    Stay safe

    Neil

    RIP Neil.............

    .................

Yes It is OK to use outside handles
Plastic Tube or Wiffle Ball. Attached to the Crown outside

I personally Don't use any handles on any Pilot Chutes that are bigger than a 38 inch. or any size pilot chute that You do a slider up BASE jump.
I feel that the more air speed in Free-Fall is safest with the Pilot Chute inside the BOC with a handle to Grab.

So Slider Up use a Handle outside the crown and make full use of the BOC to hold your Pilot Chute Clean and Safe inside it. Like the BOC was designed to be used.

A light weight handle and Smooth. They work great Just like the Millions of skydives done with exterior Pilot Chute Handles.

If it's a larger pilot chute like 42 or 48 just grab it by the crown and Throw it out.

I have used an exterior handle for all my slider up BASE jumps, No Problem

My alarm bells always ring when someone is so absolutely sure about something in BASE. How do we know how many skydivers "do" have fouled pilot chutes that still deploy a canopy because of the 120 mph airspeed? At that speed almost any wad of material will work.

Or, how about all the slow skydiving deployments that occur for unexplained reasons. Mostly these are chalked up to pilot chute hesitations, but I wonder how many might really be fouled pilot chutes?

So be careful justifying a BASE technique merely because it's something that works in that other sport. Skydivers deploy high and carry a reserve. BASE jumpers do neither.

So like everything else it's a compromise a jumper makes. A sure pilot chute deployment because there's an external handle vs. a fouled pilot chute. On the other side there's always the chance of problems because there is no handle. It's a decision BASE jumpers should make on their own.

My own opinion is no handle is best, internal handles are okay, and outside handles are taking a chance.

In BASE it's that million and one occurrence that can kill you . . .

However, I do see your overall point about terminal jumps and pilot chutes handles, and I think this is an area the next revolution in BASE gear will address.

Fact: You take a BASE rig with a proper packed canopy.
Take a properly made Pilot Chute and Properly fold it.
    Stow it in a BOC
    Be Altitude Aware
Grab a hold and pitch the Pilot Chute out @ the desired safe altitude.

Fact: The Pilot Chute having a Proper made external handle on it is the Least of My Worries.
I Will and Do, Bet my Life on that every time and Win.
