Perrine Bridge BASE jumper dies when chute fails to open

06:39 PM MST on Friday, November 3, 2006

    KTVB file photo

A BASE jumper died Friday afternoon when his parachute failed to open after he jumped off the Perrine Bridge and hit the Snake River with a tremendous impact.

TWIN FALLS -- Emergency crews in Twin Falls are on the scene of a BASE jumping death at the Perrine Bridge.

A Twin Falls County Sheriff's deputy says the man, who is from out-of-state, jumped off the bridge late this afternoon, but his parachute failed to open.

Deputies say the man hit the Snake River with tremendous impact and died.

The deceased man has not yet been identified.

The Perrine Bridge is the only man-made structure in the U.S. where BASE jumping is legal without a permit every day of the year.

This was the second BASE jumping death at the bridge in 2006.

From the sounds of it, this is another PC packing tool death. The reports seem to be that a pull up was left around the PC.

For christ sakes, how many people need to go in before people realise that this is a really really lazy way to pack a PC that has massive impact (quite literally) if you do not keep to your pattern of packing and remove the thing. Just dont ****ing do it.

as far as i know Mac,your info aint correct..
The jumper died as of a result of headlow deployment, were bridel wrapped his leg, were it stayed untill impact.

I know info out there says that he used tools to pack the pc,but also info says that it wasnt an issue as it wasnt left there..(look at the list)

It dosnt change the fact that using pullupcords etx to pack a pc is stupied..

    condolance to family and freinds

Re: Perrine Bridge BASE jumper dies when chute fails to open

I got the info from this:

From viewing the photos, my conclusion is that there was a restrictive device of some kind tied around the pilot chute.

The PC is clearly in a fully extended position (at bridle stretch, with mesh fully extended) but with the ZP gathered in a tight bundle, and can be seen towing behind the jumper in this position in two photos shot in sequence, with around 100 feet of freefall between them. Under digital enhancement, a bit of orange color can be seen trailing beside the black ZP (the pull up cord that the jumper used repacking his PC at exit was orange).

Re: Perrine Bridge BASE jumper dies when chute fails to open

I would have thought that a search of the jumpers pockets would turn up the pull up cord if it was removed from the pilot chute prior to jumping. He's got to have put it somewhere before jumping. I'd wager a bet that if someone went and searched the banks down stream / down wind, they'd find it.
