On my first BASE jump in 1991 I said "3, 2, 1, see ya at the bottom" and then jumped. I had never heard anyone say anything like that before so I was just saying something that came out naturally. It was totally organic. I'm sure lots of guys said this sort of thing long before 1991. I don't think anyone can really know who said it first or where it started.

Didn't Moe Viletto say it after "gravity check" like 100 years ago?

Supposedly, the countdown originated with old school "Direct-Bag" jumps.
The jumper would give a countdown, so the bag holder would be ready when the jumper left the edge.
"What we have here is a failure to communicate. There's some people you just can't reach."
dont know how true this is but i did read somewhere about the first post of a base jumper when the internet first came out and yes this was before the early 90's the guy would leave a message like a blog and say where he was jumping that weekand ,i think his name was mike
and he would always end his blog with
C-YA
around then i think he was just writing a message for a friend .
Ironically, I mentioned to a few base jumpers at the Perrine Bridge recently, that I learned all I needed to know about base jumping which was: 3-2-1 See ya. I must have heard it enough to figure it was routine. ( I admit there's no adrenaline rush for me as I don't jump afterward).
I have never said 321-cya. Ever.

I would take it seriously; but it's serious and ridiculous at the same time. -sl
First time I ever heard it was my brother Randy said it just as he exited New River in 83. We finished breathing a couple of "nitrogen" balloons, he got up, said 321 CYA, did a layout front loop and landed in the middle of the sandbar using a 5 cell stratostar. I had never heard the phrase 321CYA before that time.

Rad... that reminds me, i wrote randy a postcard in chile but here i am back in the US and its sitting here somewhere! How is randy doing?? I'm going to send him this son of a bitch anyway ihoped it would be a good cheer up
my very first base jump i asked corky (corkscrew) "what's with this 3-2-1 cya thing?" before i climbed the railing at the perrine and left with "4-5-6 suck my ass!"
so if anyone asks... i invented 4-5-6 suck my ass. heheh
