STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 13 (UPI) -- A Swedish base jumper died in Portugal during a jump after his parachute failed to open, officials said.

The 29-year-old Swede, whose name was not reported, died after making a 328-foot jump in Nazare, The Local.se reported Saturday.

"We don't know what happened, but the parachute didn't open," Lourenco Gorricha, of the Nazare police, told the Expressen daily. "He showed no signs of life when we got to him."

The Swede, who had completed more than 300 jumps, was visiting Portugal with Norwegian friends to make the jump in Nazare.

"He was a very positive human being, a fantastic person," said Jon Martin Engebretsen, chairman of the Norwegian Tonsberg parachute club, of which the deceased jumper was a member.
