An Australian man who was BASE jumping in Wayne County was killed in an accident Friday morning, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

Wayne County officials said the sheriff’s office along with the county’s search and rescue team recovered the body of the 35-year-old at the Angel Point Trailhead near the Dirty Devil River.

The man was with another BASE jumper when, for an unknown reason, the victim fell 600 feet to his death, according to a statement. Wayne County officials recovered the man’s body with the help of a helicopter from the Department of Public Safety. His body was then taken to the medical examiner’s office. The sheriff’s office said Saturday morning that the death is still under investigation. The office did not release the victim’s name.

It’s not the first time this year someone has been killed doing risky activities in Utah’s vast southern deserts. In March, Kyle Stocking, of West Jordan, died in an accident while he was using a rope swing attached to the Corona Arch near Moab. In May, another man fell 200 feet in Day Canyon, also near Moab, after he and another woman had finished swinging from a rope attached to a cable stretched across the canyon.
