Hey Nigel,
Thank you for your account of that night. Sorry you had to witness the mistake of using a pullup cord to pack the pilot chute and hear that hideous sound. Were you you taught the same method?

years ago i was huckin this building. over and over and over.....
one night, somewhere between old blue, climbing through the fence, bobbing and weaving, and flying up 37 flights of stairs, my pc feel out of the boc. so i tripped a bit and just went hand held. i always packed it with a clamp. i didn't have one.
......now i don't use one. simple solution to a simple problem
I have been taught to pack, but not how to do the pilotchute,
That's because I am still learning by PCA and have no need to stow the PC yet,
Pauls service was yesterday, and we celebrated his life last night in a fashion that he would be proud of,
Be safe

people still use lots of pull up cords for packing ,to keep line ,risers ,and pilot chutes open .most base jumpers are simply to dam cool if you tell them not to do it . i think(because it doesnt matter how clean you pack base packing to me seems like the same than any other parachute sloppy packjob =perfect opening, perfect packjob ****ty opening) leave all these packing tools at home you dont need them .and if you can pack a pilotchute without a pull up ,or rubberband sell your base rig and start surfing.
