SUPERIOR, Wis. - Two planes associated with a skydiving group in Superior, Wis. crashed in mid-air on Saturday night.
KBJR-TV reports that one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Officials say the two planes, a lead plane and a trail plane, were flying together with a group of nine skydivers for a tandem jump.
The planes hit 12,000 feet when the trail plane came over the top of the lead plane and got caught up in its turbulence, causing it to hit the plane, KBJR-TV reported.
The wings came off of the lead plane and it started on fire, disintegrating on its way to the ground.
Skydivers in both planes were just getting ready to dive when the collision happened. All of them were able to jump out of the planes and out of harm's way.
The pilot of the trail plane landed the plane safely.
The pilot of the destroyed plane had to use an emergency parachute. That pilot suffered minor injuries from the impact of landing and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, KBJR-TV reports.
Superior Skydive says they are suspending all flight operations at this time.
The FAA has been called in to investigate the incident.
