Line Release Mod
This page is a chapter in 'BASE Wiki Packing'
Line Release Modification: Todo; talk about different configs (Keeper and no grommet. Grommet and no keeper) and why they are dangerous. Talk about whether or not its a good idea on skydives (slider might not come down, or come down slowly).
The Line Release Mod has been developed when it became clear that lineovers were appearing more often on Slider Down jumps.
The idea is basically really simple : If you take the control line outside of the slider grommet and outside the keeper ring, you have the control line free from your hand to the trailing edge (once unpopped). In case of lineover, just release the toggle, and the control line will go away clearing up the malfunction.
Then, you have to land with your risers because once released, theres no way to recover the control line floating in the wind - so impossible to recover..
There's a discussion about the dangers of using the LRM (lines routed outside of the grommets) when jumpind SL-down VS the pro's of LRM (ability to deal with a lineovers)
There's been accidents where people lost a toggle after a normal openings because of the LRM and had to land a canopy with rear risers. Whatever the skill level, it's always easier and safer to land with both brakes!
Nowadays, given that
a) we now have some good models of LRT (line-release-toggles) on the market
b) with the tailgate and a proper packing, the likelihood of lineovers are near zero
then more and more people stop using the LRM on SL-down jumpe because they feel that it's overall safer (note that this might not apply to every jump).
